Unlikely Pair

Chapter 5

Normally I hated gym but today wasn't a normal day. I was fueled with anger. Our gym teacher had decided to let us play volleyball, usually I didn't participate but today I did.

I joined the game, and boy did I dominate. Every time the ball came to me I smacked it extra hard and since I was in the top row I would end up spiking it. I don't know why but no one attempted to go after the ball when I hit it.

My team won and they gave me props. I was felt proud of myself and most of the anger I had dissolved. I had never played volleyball that well.

"Salvatore!" My gym teacher called.

"Yes?" I asked running over to her.

"You ever thought about going out for volleyball?"

"No. I'm not good at it."

"Obviously you are if I want you on the team. I better see you at the tryouts next week starting Monday." She said before walking away.

I walked back to the locker room to change my clothes. Taking a drink of water from the water fountain before exiting. When the bell rang I saw Derek waiting for me. Going over to him he grabbed my hand and we walked to the lunch room.

We went in the line and Lauryn soon joined us. I was talking to her when I felt Derek's grip on my hand tighten. Looking up at him, I saw his jaw clenched and him staring someone down. I looked and found what he saw.

Luke was watching me. Him and his friends. But what shocked me most was he was walking this way. He casually strolled over to me skipping the line behind me.

"Hello Derek." He sneered to Derek.

"Edwards." Derek replied in a cold tone. I looked at Lauryn who was shifting uncomfortably.

"Luke what do you want?" I asked pushing front of Derek.

"Well we are partners and I just thought we should bond." He said looking down at me.

"Back off Edwards." Derek growled while gripping my hips and pulling me closer to him.

"Whatever." Luke said glaring at Derek before looking at me again. "See you during free period love." Luke said while tapping my nose and skipping ahead to get lunch.

"Why is he seeing you free period?!" Derek asked spinning me around to face him.

"Well I needed to tell you about that."

"Well tell me about it!" He said getting angry.

"Let's go somewhere private after we've eaten okay?"

"Fine whatever." He said as he walked forward and got his food.

Derek ignored me for most part of the lunch. Lauryn had tried to make conversation but I wasn't into it. Once Derek was done he picked up his tray in one hand and grabbed my wrist with the other. I quickly grabbed my tray and stuff as I was being pulled by Derek.

We dumped them and he continued pulling me. We had walked out of the lunch room by now and he was still walking off. I didn't know where we were going.

"Derek! Stop dragging me like a child!" I yelled at him.

"Your acting like one!" He spat as his grip tightened around my wrist.

"Derek your hurting me!" I cried out.

"Fuck! I'm sorry!" He said releasing me quickly and stopped in his tracks.

"It's fine." I mumbled rubbing my wrist.

"Tell me."

"Well Mr. Mason assigned him as my partner in English also. So now I have two projects with him and we need time to work on them. I told him I would go to the library free period but I was going to bring you along too."

"I can't make it. Keep going."

"I also have detention later today thanks to him. Mr. Mason gave it to us for not doing our assignment. I refused to speak with Derek about his facts on his life and chose to write them down and trade instead. Mr. Mason didn't like that and gave us detention."

"I don't like you being alone with him."

"Well why can't you come free period?"

"I'm busy."

"With?"

"Nothing it's personal."

"I'm your girlfriend. You can tell me."

"Don't worry about it!" Derek said slamming his hand against how nearest locker. The noise making me jump and he stormed away.

I didn't know what to do, so I headed to the library. When I got there I went to a table and got out some work I could do. I started reviewing the notes I had taken on the reproductive system.

"Is this seat taken?" A voice asked.

"No."

"Good now what're you working on partner?"

"Just reviewing what I had on the reproductive system." I said looking up at Luke.

"Well I can get my stuff out on that too." He said reaching into his bag.

"Did the bell ring?"

"No."

"Then why are you here?"

"I noticed you didn't return with Derek so I thought you might be here."

"Why were you even on the lookout for me?" I asked curiously.

"No reason. Shall we review each others stuff?" He asked and a small smile spread across my face.
