"So team, I need you guys to be super professional. Dress like you've got some sense and kill it. Can I ask that of all you?" Cameron asks with much spunk. We all scream yes in unison for the fifth time replying to each of his demands for this red carpet event the Leid owners are hosting.
"Wear a black leotard with a leather skirt or something." Atlas suggests as we scim through a magazine in the break room.
"I don't want to look like I shop at Forever 21. I need to look like a million bucks."
"If you don't have it, don't act like it." Atlas walks away.
"Cene?" I turn to my left to see Cameron standing halfway outside his office.
I already know he wants to see me. So I just answer, "Sure." My stomach turns in the worst way as I am making my way back to the office. He asks me to close the door behind myself and sit down. I do so.
Cameron looks timorous as he sits in his desk and stares at me. This is the first time I am seeing him like this. His eyes are tired, with bags underneath and he's breaking out all over. His hair is barely done, either.
"So I'll get to it. I'm sorry for the things I said. Completely out of line, not in my nature to say things like that to anybody. Especially a new girl."
"Thank you." I simply say. He waits for me to say anything else. I just stare back.
"...Okay? How do you feel? He rubs his thumbs as he leans in with his arms folded on the desk.
"I feel...upset. But it was totally my fault." I admit. "It was a very dumb thing to do and I should have just stayed home and took care of my brother."
"You were the only one who could take care of him?" he asks concerned.
"Yes. At that moment."
"Okay. I'll tell you what, if that ever happens again, just bring him in. We'll keep in the pillow area or the nap room and we can all take turns watching him. That okay?"
I was shocked by his generous offer.
"I-I...sure. That's so nice." I don't know what more to say but thank you, over and over.
"It's fine. I just have a soft spot for kids."
We nod and smile at each other in silence. Except Cameron's smile seems forced. I am about to leave his office but decide to sit back down. He turns back over to me from his computer.
"Yeah?" He asks.
"I...never got to apologize for that fitting room incident. I didn't intend for any of that to happen."
"My girlfriend is a hoe. Not your fault."
I want to laugh at how honest he was being but something told me not to.
"I guess so. I just wish you didn't have to witness that."
He looks at me not blinking, "It's better I found out now so I can move on to something better."
I inhale as my eyes get big. Cameron raises his eyebrow confidently and turns back to his computer.
"Wow." I whisper under my breath.
"What was that?" He's amused I can tell.
"See ya." I rush out of there before this boy gets me wet.
I go out to the floor and Atlas holds up a black dress.
