Chapter 8: Mesmerized

I sat in my room on a late Sunday night. Alex had left earlier in the day, giving me some time to go back to the woods but just like yesterday, she never showed. I didn't want to fix myself on her so I did everything I could to try not to. I even watched movies with my mom after we came home from church, then left about twenty minutes ago to get some sleep and from the sounds of it, my mom had gotten up and gone to bed.

So I was just sitting on my bed, messing around with some fans on Twitter in my jammies. Living the life, I guess but I was bored and couldn't sleep and my fans were always there.

I was halfway asleep when I kept hearing what sounded like someone knocking on my window. I stared at my lockscreen, it was almost 3 am. The tapping kept repeating and repeating and aggravating me, so I hopped off my bed and shot to my window. I had to unlock it, it was never open, and I pushed it up with extreme force I thought it would break, "Who the f---..."

"Hi, sorry, I know it's late..." She whispered from the path, I could see her perfectly, knew exactly who was trying to get my attention. It was Alexandra.

I got lost staring at her, she always looked perfect, no matter what light. Even more perfect in the moonlight. I shook myself, snapping out of my trance, "I'll be right down."

I kept my cool closing the window, just backing out slowly, but the minute my curtains closed I burst out into awkward dancing, my happiness taking over. I threw on a pair of shoes, beaming, gliding down the stairs and out of the door without a sound. Like a ghost wading through. I ran out to the edge of the yard to meet her.

"How did you find out where I lived, you creep?" I joked, nudging her shoulder. She gave me a light smile.

"I may have followed you home like a stalker but shhh, you can't tell anyone!" She laughed with me, "I guess we're both creeps, huh?"

"Hey, I followed you in broad daylight. If you haven't noticed, this isn't daylight. Its almost 3!"

"Sorry 'bout that, I just got back. I felt bad for never showing up but it technically wasn't my fault." She crossed her legs, tying her hands behind her back like an innocent child. She stared down at the ground, then back up at me.

I just smiled, "Oh yeah, well then who's fault was it?"

"My sister kidnapped me in the middle of the night. She lives in Dallas, so I've been at her place for the past couple of days."

That explains why she never showed up. I crossed my arms and gave her comical stare, "I'm waiting on my apology."

"That's what I came here to do!" She pushed at my shoulder, I stumbled backwards and chuckled in her face.

"You hit like a girl!" She smirked at me, strong arming me and punching me in the shoulder and I yelped out in pain, "Ouch!"

"But I hit like a girl though."

"You have a few surprises up your sleeve."

"And I have many more!" Her voice sounding like an enchantress's, I was falling under. She walked deeper into to the woods and I followed. She twirled, spinning on the balls of her feet. She smiled back at me following, "Where are you going?"

I stopped, aware that I wasn't supposed to be following, nervously laughing, "I, uh---"

"Broke your cool, I'm special." She darted off the path and into the greenery. She was playing with me, I could tell. "I have something for you, come find me if you want it."

Challenge accepted. I stepped off the path like she did and behind the bushes, I would occasional footsteps but wherever she was, she was good at hiding. I felt like I was in a movie with her, the mist rising from the ground, dew drops on leaves around me, the moonlight illuminating the forest. I sensed around from her, it was still dark out here. I took in my bottom lip, a sly smile forming when I would see her boot sliding into the darkness, "You really gotta do this to me."

"I have no idea what you're talking about, I just wanna have fun."

If this were a movie, the camera would be spinning but focused on me focusing on finding her. I switched on my feet, letting my natural instincts kick in. I reached out behind when I felt someone passing, but I grabbed at air, "This is dangerous, we could be killed."

"He won't find us, he doesn't even know I'm out." She stopped, but I still couldn't find her, it's like she was circling around me and the more I turned the more I confused myself.

"You must be talking about your dad, I figure because I was talking about a bear or a deer or a snake."

"What's the difference? He's an animal. And really? A deer, Austin?"

"Deers can fight too! Besides they're scary, they freak me out." She giggled at my response, stopping her movement, then nothing but silence. I felt a tug on my back pocket, seconds later, hearing leaves rustle in front of me.

"I have to go," She giggled, I could hear her boots ahead of me, I stepped towards her and she stopped, "Don't follow me. Just go home. And check your pocket when you get home."

How did she know? I chuckled under my breath, calling out to the woods, "Fine, but I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Go. Home."

"Fine. Bye Lex."

She paused her footsteps. I heard her smirk, is that weird? Her footsteps picked up, but in a different direction. I turned on my heels back for my house, if I could find it. The moon was being blocked by clouds so it wasn't as bright as before, making it difficult to see my way around. I made it to the edge of my yard, the motion lights the contractor installed last week beamed bright in my fragile eyes, I screamed, the lights catching me off guard. Fuck, man. I ran into the house just as quietly as I ran out, obeying the order I'd been given, making it up to my small bedroom at the end of the hall. I fingered my back pockets until I felt a piece of paper between my fingers and pulled it out. I opened it and danced.

The paper she'd given me had her name and number on it and she signed it, did you want this?

Um, hell yes.
