- February 2012 -

It was just another normal Spring day in San Antonio. I was sitting at my computer, flicking a pencil back and forth just staring at the algebraic equations. Procrastinating is something I had been doing lately, I know how to do it, I'm just too lazy to actually do it. My eyes wandered to the clock in the right corner of my screen, 10:14 am.

I tapped my foot on my desk, kicking my chair back, groaning. I wasn't in regular school anymore, my mom had taken me out a week after I had started in August because of all the attention I was getting during class. So basically, homeschooling was the life I had to go with for now. That day she'd checked me out was the last day I'd stepped inside of a school.

My door creaked as I propped my feet up against the desk. I closed my eyes half expecting my mom to be walking through, coming home for a lunch break but then I felt paws climb across my chest and a soft meow escape from his teeny little mouth. I kissed my cat, Romo, he scratched my face, hissing at me, "Are you hungry? Is that why you're here?"

I laughed as his paws petted against my shirt, his nails sinking through at points. I set him on the floor and he shot out of my room, tail high. I laughed to myself, walking to the kitchen.

"Romo, come here! It's time to eat!" My voice echoed through my empty house. I made kissy noises and shook the feed bag for his attention, wherever he seemed to be, but he didn't come. I looked out the window seeing movement off in the distance, "Romo, I swear if you got outside again..."

I laid his bowls on the floor, making my way over to the sliding glass door. Somehow, my mischevious cat found his way outside of the house and into the woods in the backyard almost everyday. I don't know how, but he does. I slid the door, opening enough to creep my head out to examine my backyard, which was empty. Just when I was about to pull my head in, a ball of white fur shot between my feet and into the woods, "Romo! Damn it..."

I ran to my front door and grabbed a pair of shoes and shot out the sliding door. My cat always ran off like a wild dog, which was weird, considering he was a cat.

I was in a slow jog, manuevering throughout the trees, almost stepping in tons of crap along the way. Branches and twigs cracked under my feet, feeling the wind rush through my jacket. I made cat calls out into the greenery, usually pretty quickly. I called out his name but he didn't run back.

My search dragged on deeper into the woods. I felt the temperature drop a few degrees, making the hairs on my neck stand on end. Something broke my focus in the distance, distracting me from finding Romo before my mom found out he was gone. I heard what seemed like guitar strings being plucked. Someone. It was chords to a familiar song, but I couldn't quite remember which one. I prodded on, moving in the direction of the sound, the music becoming more distinct. The wind dragged on, rustling the leaves on the ground as the soft voice began to sing.

"I remember tears streaming down your face when I said 'I'll never let you go.' When all those shadows almost killed your light. I remember you said 'Don't leave me here alone.' But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight.."

Her voice seemed unreal, like her hushed singing were melodious whispers all throughtout. It brightened up the forest of trees, which was usually damp and dark. I found myself hiding behind a giant oak tree, staring at the girl from behind. She was perched on top of a giant rock on the creekside, strumming the rest of that verse. I couldn't see her face, but I imagined it to be as beautiful as her voice. It would probably be the most stunning I've ever seen.

"Just close your eyes, the sun is going down. You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now. Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound.."

She finished the chord, setting her guitar down beside the rock. I heard her sniffle, watching her hand rub across her face, drying it from tears. I slowly creeped around the tree, trying to get a better look at her face to see. What was wrong with her? I felt like a stalker, hiding and not making my presence known. I inched over, snap, another twig cracked under my Nikes. The girl shot up and spun around, unaware she was looking directly at me but she didn't see me. Her heart shaped face was a light pink color, her eyes were bloodshot and a startled expression moved across her face. Her green were like no color I'd seen before, but at the same time, they were extremely familiar. Her silky brown hair was pushed to one side of her head, the curls flowed down her right shoulder. I pushed myself over, snap. She glanced around, wiping the remainder of her tears from her face. She breathed deeply and her eyes met mine. For a split second, she had noticed me hiding. But instead of confronting me, she picked up her guitar and she ran.

A memory from school played in my brain from the day my mom checked me out, fast forward motion clips of my algebra class. I gazed around like I was there and looked beside me only to realize that girl who had just ran away from me was the girl from that day. A name ran through my mind, putting it to the face. Alexandra Blake.
