"Austin, he's going to take me!" She cried not taking her eyes off me, squeezed my hand with such strength I felt like my bones would crack under pressure. She was whispering, begging, crying, "Don't let him take me home. Please, I'm begging you Austin don't let him!!!"

I knew he was going to take her regardless of what I did or said, I didn't feel like much help. I was puny compared to the stacked frame of her dad, the only thing we were almost equally matched in was height, but he was still at least 3 inches taller than me. The closer his boots stomped towards us, the more the hair on the back of my neck stood on end. This is the fear, if not worse, of what Lex had to deal with on a daily basis. But she was absolutely terrified in the moments we were standing here. We had no place to run, he would catch us if we even attempted.

I tried calming her down but she was already so close to breaking down in tears it was useless. I just had to talk her through it, hopefully have a plan. I didn't want her going home with him more than she even thought but I couldn't think of anything quick enough. She wiped her eyes as he neared, stopping her whimpering when he was in hearing distance. I whispered to her, "He going to take you, I can't stop him..."

"But---" She tried to blurt a rebuttle but I quickly shushed her so she could hear me.

"Lex, he's going to take you, but I promise you I'll be right behind you. You just have to trust me, I'm going to do my best to come get you. Stop crying, okay?" She nodded in my command, trying to shake off her fear, "Calm down."

Her father's shadow was over me, his cool eyes serrading through my skin like he was trying to pry into my soul and use my weaknesses against me. He spoke calmly, "Alexa, why are you out of the house, sweetie? You're supposed to be doing your school work."

She stood saying nothing, staring at the ground. She squeezed my hand, gazing up at him for a quick second before dropping her head back to his feet. His attention turned to me, seething through his teeth, "And you, you son of a bitch, I thought I told you to stay away from my daughter?"

His patience grew thin when neither of us responded, rubbing his temples in frustation, "ANSWER ME, GODDAMNIT!!!"

He turned his eyes to the fragile girl who was almost at her breaking point, seeing an easy target to let out his frustrations on. Drawing his hand back quickly like he was going to strike her, I reacted, yanking her behind me and backing away, "NO! IT WASN'T HER FAULT!" I yelled, trying to get my point across, "It was my idea. Don't take it out on her, take it out on me."

Lex gasped, I could feel her breath intake on my back, squeezed harder, whispering, "Don't."

He huffed, I could immediately smell the alcohol rolling off his breath, it nearly burned my nostrils, "Alexandra, go get in the truck. I'm taking you home so we can talk."

Lex shook her head which was buried in my back, her tears falling through my shirt. I could feel it, she refused to go with him and his temper got worse and he started shouting at her through me. I ran my thumb across her hand, every decibel higher his voice would go, she'd squeeze my hand harder until I lost feeling, "Lex, just go with him. It won't help..."

"You better listen to whatever the fuck he is to you, Lex." He hissed at her.

"Don't call me that!" She screamed to him, hiding behind me.

"I can call you whatever the fuck I want, now GET IN THE DAMN TRUCK."

"Lex, please!!!"

"Austin, you promise?" She whispered to me, her voice breaking.

"What are you two saying?"

I nodded, squeezing her hand, "Go."

Lex tore herself away from me, sprinting as fast as she could to the pick up truck. She looked back at me and I could nothing in her eyes.

With the exception of fear and pain.

I was running, I had been for almost 3 miles now and I was nowhere near close. I was panting already and I still had a mile and a half to go. I was pushing myself, pushing my heart, my lungs, anything I needed to get to her faster. Before he could do anything to her. I was hopeful he hadn't, maybe he's actually talking to her but just in case, I needed to be there. I was dehydrated, red as a tomato, panting for breath. Just over the hill and you're there. Just get over the hill. I know, I know, I was trying. Having on sandals didn't make this any easier, they got caught up in branches and tall grass and mudspots were everywhere. The opening to her house finally came into view, now I knew I could help.

I sprinted across the yard, standing just under the kitchen window. I squatted, catching what little breath I had left, deep breaths were all I could hear from myself but I could feel my windpipes straining. I switched back to breathing normally, listening into what was going on in the house. My stomach churned the second I could hear what was going on, a few things being broken, things being thrown on the far side of the house. Then I heard her scream, sending chills down my spine.

I snatched the back door open, ducking behind a halfwall in the kitchen. I tried collecting my breaths at a noise length where it wouldn't be noticeable if he passed by. I heard a door slam, faint crying in the distance, and I shuddered. I knew it was her. I felt uneasy, disappointed in myself that I couldn't get here sooner. I heard his boots stomping down the hall against the wooden flooring, picking up his keys, yelling, "AND YOU BETTER STAY IN THE DAMN HOUSE NEXT TIME, ALEXA."

The door slammed behind him, seeing a piece of glass crack from the force. His truck spurred to life, back out of the driveway, and take off down the street. I hopped to my feet, jogging down the hallways to search for Lex's door. I came across a beat up, faded, wooden door with graffiti letters etched into it. With a good guess I assumed this was the one. I tried opening it but it wouldn't budge, my blood boiled. I jerked the handle, throwing my shoulder into what seemed like a brick wall. The door flew open, revealing a torn up girl's bedroom. She panicked, letting out a shriek, twisting around and fighting back.

She didn't look like the same girl that had been stolen away from me, she looked completely different, duranged almost. She fought blind, her eyes closed as she swung at me having no idea who had pried open the door, "Lex! It's me! It's just me! Calm down!"

She dropped everything, opening her eyes to me. She plunged into me, wrapping around me so tight. Tears streaming down her face, I held her close in my arms as she sobbed, "Austin!!!"

I kissed her cheek, feeling her body her once tense body relax in my arms, "I promised you."

She pulled away from me, I crashed my lips into hers. So soft, so delicate, her trembling stopped, bringing her hands up to the collar of my shirt, tugging me towards her. My arms were wrapped around her waist, making sure she didn't go anywhere. Time seemed to freeze, stopping to let us have our moment. I pulled away, placing a quick peck on her lips, "Pack a bag."

She hesistated backing away from me, "You're taking me?"

"Pack whatever you need, we need to be out of here before he comes back." I checked through her blinds, making sure he was nowhere in sight, eyes scoping from one end of the street to the other. Lex raced around, throwing clothes and things into a duffelbag, anything she would need while she was gone. I sat on her broken bed, catching up on the breath I lost earlier. I began to think.

She needed an escape from this life she was being forced to live, seeking refuge in me because I'd do anything for her. I could get in deep shit with this, my mom would be on my ass every minute of everyday if she found out where I was taking her. This is very well one of the dumbest, most least thought out plans I had ever came up with in my life. And I never cared about the consequences, I was helping my best friend through a difficult time.

But technically, it's also still kidnapping.
