Her eyes shifted to the door, peeking from behind the mantle where her aggressor stood pounding. I reached for her hand, trembling under the pressure while I stood next to her racking my brain for something to do before he managed to break down my door.
"I know she's in there! You can't hide forever!"
"Austin, what am I going to do?" She cried in barely a whisper, squeezing me tighter until I began to lose the feeling in my hand, "He'll kill me! Or beat me until I wish I was dead... I can't go back! I'm afraid of wh---"
"Shhh, shhh," I cut her off. I was just as terrified as she was but I tried to keep calm for her sake. I clamped my hand over her mouth and she whimpered, throwing her back against the wall, "I got this. I'm going to keep you safe."
I honestly couldn't fight him, I was a pencil compared to him. The best thing I could do is run and hide and pray he didn't find us.
I snapped in Alex's face, he was pale, blankly looking around, "Alex..."
Her father pounded on my front door, my heart beating to the knocks, I began sweating hearing the chill of his voice taunt us behind the wooden frame.
"ALEX!" He jerked back into reality, turning his eyes towards me, "I need a favor..."

What am I even doing? Why did I even agree to this? Maybe because he's my best friend and he's like my brother and he rarely asks me for favors and it's kind of my fault this shady guy is beating on the door.
Here goes nothing.
I waited for the signal, footsteps treading behind me, back across the house. I heard the side window open, three snaps in the distance and there was my cue.
I flipped the lock, keeping my cool to reveal the tall, intimidating man. I swallowed big, "Yes?"

Austin took my hand, ducking down through his own house. He pulled me into the den, jumping onto the couch, quietly pushing the blinds over and opening the window. His fingers tracing the screen, sliding out of it's hold, he jumped through.
"Give me your hand," He whispered, I obeyed. My fingers slipped through his from the sweat pouring out of them, forcing Austin to grab me by my waist to help me out of the sill. He snapped into the house three times before grabbing my wrist and taking off into the darkness.
I felt horrible. He was doing so much for me, even risking his own well being to keep me safe. I wanted to just leave him, being my friend was too much to handle for the average guy. That's probably why I didn't have any anymore... Because of him. Austin's life would be better if he didn't have to deal with me... But he insisted. Before I knew it, I had snatched my wrist from his grasp.
Austin looked back at me, dumbdounded, "Lex, what are you doing? C'mon, we're almost there!"
He took a hold of my hand, pulling me to come with but I refused. Alexandra Elaine Blake, what are you doing?
"Lex, you wanted me to help you, you were in tears saying you needed to get away from him and now I'm trying to help and you don't wanna come!" His tone hinted aggravation, his eyes widened at me.
I swallowed hard, "Leave me."
"What?" He shook his head, "No! Are you kidding?"
"I'm serious," I crossed my arms over my chest, staring down at the ground, "You can be happy with someone else... Be loved without risking your safety... You don't need to do this for me..."
