Lex slipped off her boots by the sliding door, sitting them next to my mud-stained sneakers. I stripped off my sweatshirt, throwing it onto the coat rack by the front door. It was soaked from the rain but my shirt wasn't, which I found hard to believe. Lex looked around my kitchen, twisting her necklace between her thin fingers, "Nice place."
I rubbed my socks on the tile, getting that slippery feeling beneath my feet and immediately starting sliding around the kitchen. I glided to Lex, stopping right next to her, and throwing my hip at hers, "Thanks."
She slid into a counter, wailing out in pain, doubling over, "Ouch! Austin, that really hurt."
I rushed over to her, "I'm really sorry I didn't mean to---"
She pulled on my shirt as soon as I was inches away from her, swiftly sliding her leg behind my own, kicking them from out under me. I hit the ground on my back with a loud thump, groaning from the fall. She stood over me, her arms crossed, just laughing, "I can't believe you fell for that!"
"You're gonna regret that, I promise you!"
"Oh yeah, I'm really scared... Boo hoo hoo!."
I lurched for her legs and she sped off, sliding to the staircase but I wasn't far behind. I was off my back in a matter of seconds, chasing her up the stairs. Granted, I nearly fell a few times, it was like I was stepping on banana peels like in the cartoons, slipping and almost falling. While she managed to be up on the balls of her feel the entire time, laughing at my clumsiness. I've ran up these stairs plenty of times before, what was so different? She darted down the hall like she knew exactly where she was going, jangling a nervous hand on my doorknob to pry it open. I slid fast after her, my feet sliding from under me in the process. I fell on my butt and slid the rest of the way, slamming into the wall just as she pushed through. She paused, staring around my room, observing all of the posters plastered across my walls. She spun around right into my tackle, falling to the ground with a laugh, "The floor must be your best friend, huh?"
"Shut up, my mom just waxed the floor." I laughed, lying through my teeth. She made me so clumsy, something about her made my legs go weak.
"You say that, but we both know that's not true," She smiled, taking a deep breath. I could feel her chest heaving under my own, "now some oxygen would be nice."
"Oh right..." I pushed myself off of her, standing to my feet. I extended my hand out to her, helping her, "Uh, this is my room."
"I hadn't noticed," Her voice clearly hinting sarcasm, smiled and read the walls. She ran his hands over my piano, plucking the guitar strings on my wall, "what do you do, Austin?"
"I kind of sing."
"Kind of? This doesn't look like kind of."
"I have a Youtube account and I post covers, and I have fans and stuff. Its pretty cool."
She smiled, tapping my drumset, "Do you have any of your own songs?"
"Yeah, one. It came out on Valentine's Day."
Her eyes lit up, rushing back over to my guitar, snatching it from the wall, "Wanna teach me how to play it?"
I raised an eyebrow, chuckling under my breath, "You sure? It's pretty bad."
"I don't believe you, you're lying. I know you are." She grinned at me and plopped onto my bed, folding her legs and getting into position to play. She poked out her lips, giving me a classic puppy dog pout, "Please?"
"Now how could I possibly say no to that face?" Easily, but still impossible.
She clapped her hands, doing a little awkward sitting down dance. She looked adorable, shaking her head to an unheard rhythm, it made me laugh. She took of her jacket, tossing it onto my computer chair, revealing a cream colored long-sleeved shirt. She tugged at her sleeves and cleared her throat, "Okay, I'm ready."
I didn't know how to do this without being obvious about how much I liked her, so I got extremely nervous. I fixed myself behind her, pushing my legs out in front of me. She scooted back, she was practically in my lap but I tried to think nothing of it. You're teaching her how to play 11:11, that's it. Calm down. But my heart was racing. I brought my hands up to my guitar, which was still tight under her arms. My hands touched hers and I realized how bad they were sweating, I rubbed them on my sheets, "Sorry, it's just really hot... Okay, so the first part goes like this..."
I positioned her fingers on top of the right strings, teaching her the basic strings first. My hands were getting even more clammy by the second, I was constantly taking them off hers and shaking the sweat from them. She giggled at me everytime I did it, knocking some of the nervousness out of me. She took over the strings, playing back exactly what I taught her just like I did, "So like this?"
"Yeah, and you pretty much got it." She smiled, staring down at my guitar. She continued to strum, her focus sharpening and straining at certain parts, but other than that she was playing perfectly. Out of natural instinct, I took my hands off my guitar and let her get used to the rhythm, wrapping my arms around her waist. Her body tensed, she stumbled on a chord for a second, but soon relaxed in my arms, "Is this okay?"
"Yeah, sure." She cleared her throat, "I just wish I knew the words."
I didn't say anything, I just listened to her play until I found myself singing for her, "Yeah, 8 7 6 to the 5, I'll be singin' your song and I'll sing it all night cuz 4 3 2 1, I don't wanna be singin' alone. You are the perfect melody but now my harmony's feelin' outta key. And I just wanna feel your love again, why don't you say that we're more than friends? Because I know the way she's on my mind, she's got me all worked up inside..."
My voice stopped but she continued to go on, like she never wanted to stop. I untied my arms from around her waist, staring down at her face, so calm, so cool, so happy. I watched her skin crinkle from the half smile forming as she played, her eyes would dart to multiple points on my guitar and those bumps she would hit while playing seemed to fade. I lost myself for a moment when she stopped and looked at me, her face just inches away from my own because of how close we were. And that's when I knew I had to do it.
I dove in for one of things I anticipated the most: a kiss. Pushing my face against hers and letting feelings take control. She didn't push me away, she kissed me back, her fingers grazing my jawline. Her touch sent shockwaves all over my body. I couldn't imagine how much feeling could come from this one sweet kiss, thinking it was just an innocent crush. It turned out to be much more than I thought. Our lips moved with a certain rhythm, much like she did when she happy/awkward danced. I felt myself smiling, stopping it in the middle.
My smile faded just as her eyes crept open, waiting for her reaction. But it wasn't the one that I hoped would be there. A look of confusion sprung up where I thought happiness would be, she broke eye contact with me, "I can't... have to go..."
