Chapter 25

Katherine's POV :
It had been over two hours and Jack was still dancing with Violet .

I stood up and I was going to leave for a moment . "Katherine? Where are you going ?" My mother asked .
"To go feed Joseph. I didn't leave him enough milk "
"Oh , okay hurry deary . We still have much of the ball left !" My mother said .

I walked out to go see my baby.
"Clara , go take a break for a couple minutes-"
"Okay " she said .

I held my baby . "Hello Joseph. We're daddy you may ask ? I don't wanna talk about it . Are you having a good Christmas ? I hope so . I'll have those photos developed tomorrow... I've been here for a while haven't I ? I should get back to that stupid party I'll be back soon. " I said then kissed his cheek and laid him back in his crib .

I walked back into the ball . There's still dancing ! Violet wore a green dress opposed to my red one and she had on  necklace . She has long blonde hair with blue eyes .  Her dress was not as large as mine but much more .... Revealing . With a deep plunge and a long slit up the leg .

Jack and her were dancing and this hands where on her waits rather low ... They weren't just box dancing they were dancing much closer and lusty ... He never dances with me like that .

They stopped and he kissed her hand . She smiled and Jack came to our table .

"Do we have any champagne?" Jack asked . I shook my head no .
"Waiter ? Can we please get a glass of champagne?" The waiter nodded and then brought him a glass .

"Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome to the first ever New-Cal York Christmas ball ! My wife and I welcome you all and wish you all a merry Christmas and happy New Years ! ... Cheers !" Jack said and took a sip of the champagne . The guests clapped and went back to dancing and laughing and talking .

"Jack -"
"I'm going to go back to Violet ... She's going to stay with us for a couple days "
"Jack -"
"Okay , bye " he then went to her table .

My heart was physically breaking.
"Aunt Medda ? I don't feel so well I'm going to bed I don't wanna spread anything -"
"Okay sweetheart . Just be careful around Joseph. He has a very weak immune system at this point"
"Of course " I then hugged her goodbye and walked up to my room .

Clara was sitting in the rocking chair sewing a small patchwork .
"Party done so soon ?"
"Yeah , go ahead , go sleep . Thank you for all your help "
"It's no problem "
"Clara ?"
"Hmmm ?"
"Thank you ... Really . You mean so much to me " I said and hugged her .
"You do too Katherine. Sweet dreams ... Oh and Merry Christmas!"
"Merry Christmas " I said . She left and it was just my baby and me .

I took off  my dress and hung it up . Then my makeup and hair . I threw on a nightgown and laid down .

Suddenly Joseph started to cry .
I walked to him and held him .
"Shhh , it's okay mommys here , I'll always be here " I said rocking him .

I changed him then fed him then burped him then tucked him in .... Four times .

It was 2:30 and the ball hasn't ended yet . But Jack and I always left early .

As if a flash the door opened . Jack came in . "Katherine ! There you are everyone was looking for you ! You missed a great time ! Oh you should have been there ! We were dancing and singing and Violet and I danced ! Oh it was so much fun ! Where were you ?"
"Here ... We were both supposed to be home at 11:30 it's 2:30 !"
"The ball just ended geez , cut me some slack !"
"Slack " I said under my breath .
"What ?" He said turning his head and clenching his jaw .
"Slack . Like slacking off for Violet ?"
"Katherine what are you saying ?"
"You danced with me once !  You danced with her the rest of the night !"
"Katherine! I was just catching up with a friend !"
"A dance or two yes but not a whole god damn ball !"
"Why are so upset ?" Jack said as he began to take off his suit .
"I was here taking care of our baby while you were out having fun !"
"Clara could have taken care of him !"
"That's not her job ! Her job is to help me -"
"Babysitting is helping "
"No , she volunteered. She and Davey were supposed to go to the ball too ... But the didn't so they could watch Joseph while we where there . It's bad enough they don't have personal lives so I thought I would come home early... We both were suppose to "
"What do you want me to do ?"
"Nothing Jack . Just nothing !" I said and out Joseph in his bassinet in our room .

"Katherine why are you so mad ! So I caught up with an old friend what's the big deal ?" Jack asked .
"The big deal is the way you caught up !"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"The way you danced . You held her . You touched her . You kissed her hand longer than you've kissed mine and were married ! You laughed with her . You looked down her dress and don't say you didn't because I was sitting at the table watching you ! You held her like she was your wife . You don't do that . Especially at a Christmas ball . Where's there people . People who talk about how you left me like that . People are going to assume things . I don't want them to -"
"Then you should have cut it "
"No , you should have thanked her for the dance and came to me "
"Katherine! I've danced with other women at balls !"
"Yes , my mother , your aunt ! My sister in law ! Women who are married never someone who looked like that and was that young "
"Katherine she's our age "
"18... She's 18 ... Your 18... You have a wife and son who need you too -"
"No you just don't want me to have a good time !"
"Fine , go have a good time . I'll just be here raising our son !"
"Fine ! I will !" Jack said . He then walked out the door and slammed it . Which caused Joseph to cry .
