[Part 5]
"I don't know what he'll screw this time to murder anyone caught humping on his fiancé." Vanda laughed as she spoke, coming up with a million scenarios whereby the man in topic went crazy searching for the stripper she'd hired for the occasion.
Still, she was looking for more; more men she could safely add into the guest list of the party. It was a tall order now that she'd begun to set to work because who would ever dare to risk going against Jean-Jacques by dry humping and giving a lap dance to his fiancée? On top of that, finding humans to do the job wasn't going to cut it, because there was bound to be gossiping sessions during the bachelorette party, and humans couldn't be standing idly around listening to them gossip about undead people.
Vanda might admit that maybe planning this party was as difficult as coming up with the idea of having a new television network specifically for vampires.
A loud clearing of throat took both her and Dante's attention as they turned to face the door. It took only a moment for her to connect a name to that face, and stark surprise ran through her. She had always gotten the impression that he had something to hide from the Council –hence his refusal to formally introduce himself to the Council –and yet he had the guts to appear right in the Leconte Securities' building fearlessly?
"Kay? What are you doing here?" She asked before anyone could speak, and felt Dante's curious eyes spin to land on her.
"Vanda? I didn't expect you here. I was looking for Dante Casanova." Kay's answer was nonchalant and surprised as well, though she didn't hear confusion from him. It took her a moment to remember that he already knew she was part of the North American Council.
"Aren't you supposed to be at some photo shoot or some other?" Vanda straightened a little to regain her professional posture now that a stranger had intruded on her and Dante. Not that they were the chummiest friends around. Vanda liked to consider Dante her frenemy –the guy she could trust to suck up whatever insult she threw his way. Of course, she'd made it a habit to insult him whenever she got the chance to. Which was a lot, considering how skilled he was a screwing things up especially since meeting Lexi.
"Rolex cancelled today, so I'm free. Tori's having a rare spa day. I expected you to join her, since it's your day off as well." Kay's eyes betrayed the honesty of his speech, but Vanda waved his assumption away. She didn't know what exactly it was about Kay, but she always got the sense that he was more than a simple 'whacked out guy'. Tori might say that her client was 'whacked', but Vanda knew better.
This guy was a terribly loose cannon that she wasn't sure how to deal with. Jean-Jacques had already put her on his case, and she could only pray every day that Kay wouldn't do something suicidal that would ruin her chances at getting into the good graces of Renee and Pierre Devaux.
"I've got my side of things to do here." She replied, gesturing around helplessly and waiting for him to understand that she meant the 'vampire' side of things to do. Vanda couldn't help running two completely different lives, and as a vampire himself, she was sure Kay would understand her troubles. He definitely did, as he nodded, and stepped in confidently.
"Sure," Dante muttered beneath his breath, "You're totally welcome here even though I don't know you."
"It's a pleasure to know that, Dante Casanova." Kay's reply was even and polite, extending a polite handshake over the table. "I am delighted to see how hospitable you are. The rumors must have sold you short."
Vanda hid her laughter behind her hand as she watched Dante's expression grew quickly from flattered to something of wariness, then annoyance when he realized the meaning of the heavy sarcasm behind Kay's gushing. She could not help but let loose an escaped snort of laughter when Kay winked at her in conspiracy, earning Dante's heavy glare.
