[Part 15]

Vanda didn't know when she started to think that Kay might have had a heart for the land that he had arrived in. Even though she knew right from the start that the man was no good, that no expectations should be placed on him to do any service to the NA Council, she found out that she had unconsciously done so. She should have known –the man had no morals.

But she could not stop the rage from bubbling forth when she watched him stroll out of the forest with Louis at his side, tied up but looking like nothing bothered him at all. When he made his sarcastic comment about a welcome, Vanda lost her control and found herself hurtling through the air to meet his face with a punch.

She had been ready to do so much more, but Zanetta had her pulled up almost immediately, restraining her. Vanda would admit that she let her emotions get the better of her as she began arguing with the vice-president of the Leconte Securities, but she could not help but yell back in her anger. Jean-Jacques arrived shortly after, his stern gaze finally settling the pot of boiling rage in her stomach.

"Vanda, control yourself." Jean-Jacques's stern voice, combined with the glare was enough for her shouting to quieten down. "Kay is not worth losing your top over. I get it that you've had contact with him longer than any of us here, but he is a traitor. The fact remains."

"I know!" Vanda huffed, trying her best not to work another shouting match again. "If anyone knew how to kill him, I would have long started the process."

"I'll gladly help you myself." The mild voice that interjected was irritating in her ears, and she spun around to find Kay upright and totally fine. Well, as fine as a vampire with a busted lip can be. "It'll be interesting to see how you innovative North American people try to kill me."

"Mon ami, please don't say anything more to ruin yourself. You might not care about what happens to us, but please understand that Cian and Skalov will feel the worst if you die." Louis stepped up from the behind the vampire, passing a warning glance. Vanda felt part of her anger dwindle into curiosity, as Jack and Roger-Luc exchanged gazes. Confused eyes turned to Louis, but Jean-Jacques frowned deeply.

"When have you become chummy with a traitor like him?" Jean-Jacques asked suspiciously.

"Di dio, why are you questioning Louis in that voice? He is the oldest amongst us, and he's our best friend!" Dante stepped in, quick to protect a friend.

"If you guys planned to kill me with boredom, you've already tried." Kay reminded blandly, then turned and made his slow way towards the building. Vanda frowned at how nonchalant the man was, but there was nothing she could do even when Jean-Jacques grabbed the end of the trailing rope from Kay's bundled self, jerking the man to a stop.

"What? If you guys want to stand out in the cold, be my guest. But if you looked carefully at your surveillance camera, you'll find that Skalov's men weren't nice to me either, and I've got a coat full of melting ice and snow in my shirt. So I'll like to actually go in and warm up." Kay grumbled, then jerked hard on the end of the rope that Jean-Jacques held.

Shock ran through Vanda, and she was sure the emotion was shared with her family members as they watched the synthetic steel-polymer rope snap easily, recoiling and making a gash on Jean-Jacques's hand. Kay didn't even look back, merely continuing his walk back to the laboratory as if nothing was wrong.

"For the records, he was our friend." Louis picked up shortly, making after the man. "Just because he was in acquaintance with Skalov didn't mean he would destroy our Council."

Numb with shock, Vanda followed her family members into the building, not surprised to find themselves filing into a meeting room. Kay sat in the head seat, as if unafraid of the judgement he was about to receive. Louis sat by his side, waiting patiently, totally emotionless.
