Chapter Three
I woke up under Harry's bed cover confused. I looked over at the clock, 7:43. At first I didn't remember what happened last night. Then it all slowly came back. The rain, the crash, Liam, the hospital, the doctor. I remember the doctor's face, filled with empathy and defeat. I remember Niall tumbling into his seat crying uncontrollably and Louis dropping his head. I remember Zayn looking away and getting furious really fast. I remember me holding the doctor's gaze, waiting for him to say it was a cruel joke or that in reality Liam had just lost a lot of blood. I wanted the doctor to say he was going to be fine. I needed him to tell us. But instead the doctor just said "I'm so sorry." and walked away.
Zayn stormed off and I just stood there staring at the space the doctor once stood. I stood there frozen. I couldn't move. I couldn't feel. I felt empty. Nothing gave me feeling.
No tears came. No sobs. Nothing.
The only thing I knew was that Harry was watching me. He was waiting for me to lose it. But I couldn't. I didn't believe anything. Liam was not gone and he was going to kiss me good morning in a couple hours. That was just it. That was the way it had to be.
Now I looked around Harry's room, bewildered. How did I even get here? After the hospital we came here around five in the morning and I fell asleep on their couch. Harry was bothering me about sleeping in his bed but I didn't want to put anyone in any more discomfort than they already were. But I guess he didn't listen and carried me up here when I fell asleep.
I slowly got up and looked in the mirror. I looked horrible. I had dark circles under my brown eyes and my wavy brown hair was a tangled mess. I still had on my pajamas from last night. The large gray shirt and black leggings that reached below my knees. I left my jacket and shoes beside the bed and went downstairs.
It was so quiet. Everyone was still in their rooms. I went to the living room and saw Harry spread out on sofa with his legs hanging off one end. He still had on his clothes from the night before too. I decided not to wake him up so I crept back to the kitchen. Maybe I should make breakfast. I went to take out the milk when Louis came in.
"Hey girly." He said greeting me with a kiss on the cheek.
"Morning Lou."
"Are you going to make me breakfast?" he said smiling.
"Maybe, what do you want?"
"Pancakes would be nice, with perhaps a little fruit."
I smiled. Louis as always was trying to lighten the situation as much as he could. It wasn't forced either. It was just natural for him.
A little while later after I had made about ten pancakes, Harry came in the kitchen rubbing his eyes. He looked like a little kid with his hair all messed up and his eyes.
"It actually smells good. Who cooked because I know it wasn't you Louis." he mumbled.
"Actually, I can cook Harold. You just never let me." He replied simply.
"Whatever you say." Harry said as he made his way over to me.
"You didn't have to do all of this."
"I know that. I was hungry and so was he so pancakes were made." I responded with a weak attempt at a smile.
"Alright."
We ate in silence for the most part.
"Where's Niall and Zayn?" Harry asked.
"Niall is in his room, he hasn't come out. As for Zayn, he didn't come home last night." Louis responded.
"I hope he's with Perrie." Harry said looking a bit worried. Perrie was his girlfriend. She was a sweet girl with long blonde hair and gorgeous eyes. She had a killer voice too.
"I'm going to bring up some food to Niall." I said before grabbing a clean plate and placing two pancakes with some fruit on the side.
Louis and Harry looked at each other as if wondering if that was a good idea.
"Well it's food and he needs to eat." Louis said after a few seconds.
As I went up the stairs I heard Louis add, "Besides if anything will bring him out of that room it'll probably be a combination of her and food."
I knocked on the door twice of Niall's room. He didn't answer so I knocked again.
"Niall, umm it's Ellie. I have some breakfast."
He didn't answer but I wasn't going to go anywhere. I was pretty stubborn when I wanted to be. I was about to call him again when he got up and opened the door. He was basically half asleep by the looks of it. His blonde hair was flat and his blue eyes were almost about closed.
"Pancake?" I asked softly.
He took the plate and sat on the bed without saying anything.
"Well umm I'm going to go downstairs if-"
"No Ellie don't go."
I walked over and sat on his bed. Ever since we met Niall had been like a brother to me. Even though he was older it was like I was. I cared for him a lot.
"I can't believe he's gone." He whispered.
I didn't know how to quite respond to that so we sat there without saying anything. There seemed to be a lot of that today. When he finished his food, he smiled a little and said, "Thank you, it was really yummy."
"I'm glad."
There was a knock on the door as Harry peeped his head in.
"Sorry guys, but Ellie you should probably call your aunt."
"Oh yeah, okay."
I quickly used Harry's cell phone to dial my aunt. She picked up within the first two rings.
"Harry please tell me she's with you." She answered.
"Hey it's me."
"Oh my god, honey I've been so worried. I heard last night, I am so sorry honey. I am so sorry."
"It's fine, I'm fine."
"I was working last night on one of the top floors of the hospital and I didn't hear about until later. I tried to call you."
"I left my phone and keys inside the house last night on accident."
"Alright, well I'm home. I'll wait up, okay? Please come home already."
"I'll be there soon."
"Okay, I love you. See you soon."
"I love you too."
I hung up and looked at Harry, "Could you drive me home?"
"Of course."
