Dimitri
Crouched within the bushes, I waited for her to walk by. The forest concealed me well, and it was just off of the street she walked down every day after school, or so I was told. I chuckled dryly at the thought of my human life. I sure as hell didn’t miss high school… I shook the thought and pressed myself against a tree, peering out from behind. It wasn’t every day that I was sent out on a solo mission, and while I didn’t particularly enjoy being a stalker, I figured it was better than listening to everyone argue about our next strategy against the Dark Elves. My blood boiled at the thought of those heartless, pointed-eared creatures, but once my body began to tingle with the recognition of another Immortal, I pushed the emotion aside. From behind a tall, wooden fence, she appeared. She looked to be around eighteen, being average height with a model-like figure. Her face was as beautiful and solid as marble, her mouth a rigid, seamless line.
Her lips were full, and perfectly placed on her smooth, womanly face. Her nose was childish and button-like, but it somehow suited her. I would’ve considered her delicate if she didn’t hold herself with such strength and confidence. Her hair whipped out violently behind her; fiery tendrils fierce as lava from a volcano. Her breath hung in the air as she whisked herself across the street, and she folded her arms across her chest in an attempt to keep warm. I noticed the bitter autumn chill on my skin, but it didn’t affect me like it used to. The elixir kept me warm all of the time, and it sloshed around uncomfortably in my stomach as the waves radiating from her grew stronger with her approach. I could tell the powers inside of her were strangely profound, and they were ready to be awakened. It was as if they were calling out to me, but unlike Emrick, I didn’t have the ability to stimulate them, or even tell what they were.
I just knew she was born from Immortal parents-from a royal bloodline-and that she was completely clueless as to her destiny. I stayed pressed against the tree as she walked by me, her pale gray eyes striking, yet cold. My eyes widened as her silver amulet glinted in the dull, bleak light from the sky. The gem in the center was a vibrant red-orange mixed with ice blue, and in the center the Guardian symbol was neatly carved. Her scent caressed my nostrils as she passed, a blend of apples, raspberries, and vanilla. I blinked and watched the rhythmic sway of her hips as she continued on her way home, oblivious to what she really was. I let out a quiet breath, walking back the way I had come. I pulled my cell phone out from my back pocket, dialing Emrick’s number. He answered on the first ring, which didn’t scare me nearly as much as it used to. “Dimitri…” He started, no particular emotion present in his voice. “What, did the rookie screw up already?!” Christian hollered in the background, and I rolled my eyes. At least I could focus on the job at hand, and not drool over everything with two X chromosomes. “Did you locate her?” Rick asked, and I could imagine him glaring at Chris, furrowing his eyebrows in that “dad” sort of way.
“Yeah…It’s definitely her. She has the amulet to prove it…a silver one, no less.” He was quiet for all but a second. “Interesting…” he murmured, and I could just about feel him slipping into his thoughts. I continued quickly before I completely lost him. “I’ll see you when I get back. I’m on my way now,” I muttered, clicking my phone shut and stuffing it back in my pocket. I shuddered as the tingle from her slowly began to fade, and pulled my jacket tighter around myself. I wasn’t looking forward to the next couple of weeks. Training a new recruit, if we could even get her to talk to us, wasn’t my idea of a good time, and I hoped she wasn’t going to give us too much trouble. As I jogged back to my car, I couldn’t help feeling as though we were getting in way over our heads. Something told me this was going to be far more complicated than any of us could even imagine, and I groaned quietly at the impending doom.
