Remi and Emma sang on the way to the theater, completely tone deaf and off key. Dexter and I endured the misery, and I drove faster. We were at the theater by 7:45, and I hoped we’d be able to get our tickets. I didn’t see Dimitri waiting outside, so I parked my car and we headed inside. He arrived just as we were up to the counter, and he hopped in line behind us, whipping out his wallet. I sighed as I walked over to him. Emma shoved Remi and Dexter, who turned toward me. “Remi, Dexter, this is Dimitri. Dimitri, Remi and Dexter.” “Hi, how are you?” Dimitri asked politely, outstretching his hand with a charming smile. Dexter smiled back and shook his hand, pushing his glasses back up his nose. “It’s nice to meet you,” he murmured, and Remi looked Dimitri over like he had just said something funny. “Hi. You’re not what I expected at all. I was thinking more along the lines of Satan, since…ya’ know, little Red over here isn’t exactly the nicest girl on the planet…” I punched him roughly, and he winced, crying out in pain. I smiled triumphantly, disregarding Dimitri’s laughs. “And you’re supposed to be one of the best players on the football team?”

“I can’t help it if you take steroids!” I raised my arm again, but he darted into the main lobby. Emma and Dexter laughed, and I rolled my eyes. “He’s the biggest baby I know,” I whispered, following Dimitri’s amused gaze. I shook my head. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to just…introduce you like that. I just didn’t want them-well…I didn’t want Remi to say anything. He’s really quite irritating.” “Spoken like a true friend,” he teased, flashing me those brilliant white teeth. Whatever cologne he was wearing wafted into my nose, and I appreciated the woodsy smell it held, though I figured he hadn’t put it on willingly. I managed a weak smile, following Emma and Dexter to our theater. Remi bought popcorn, a tub big enough to feed a small country, so I knew we’d be passing it around as if we were at a dinner table. Although, I wouldn’t put it past Remi to eat the whole thing himself. We sat on the left side of the theater toward the middle, Dimitri having the seat by the wall. I was next, then Dexter, Emma and Remi. I knew Emma wanted to be next to me, but was thankful she wasn’t, since she’d be eavesdropping on us the whole time.

There were still a good ten minutes worth of previews, and Dimitri took the time to talk to me, which I didn’t quite know how to take. “So? Have you always lived here?” He asked, looking me over. His eyes darted to my necklace, which was sort of customary now, and I nodded slowly. “Yeah…since I was adopted.” I had no idea why I had just said that, and I winced at my stupidity. I hated telling people I was adopted; it brought on all this sympathy and pity, which I didn’t need. What was so bad about being adopted??? “Oh! Sorry, I didn’t mean to-” “-Don’t be sorry,” I interrupted, shaking my head. “It’s not your fault.” “I…you’re right. Sorry. Anyway…do you guys come here a lot?” I shrugged, looking down at my boots. “We used to come here a lot more, but with school and stuff, not really.” “Are you a senior?” “Yeah…I can’t wait to graduate.” He smiled, looking at the movie screen. “It’s a pretty awesome experience, even when your real parents aren’t there…” I turned to him, furrowing my eyebrows. Was he making a joke??? “I’m adopted too,” he said after a few more silent moments, and my eyes cleared to understanding. “Oh…sorry, I thought you were making a joke.”

“That’d be a pretty lousy way to start a date, huh?” I smiled weakly and nodded. “Yeah. I’ll say.” He smiled, lounging back in his chair similar to how I was. Emma grinned at me when he wasn’t looking, and I rolled my eyes, turning to the screen once the movie started. I didn’t really look at Dimitri much through the movie, though he kept looking over at me like he wanted to say something. Dexter passed me the popcorn, and I thanked him, putting it between Dimitri and me. I ate a few handfuls, while he only ate a few pieces. “Not a popcorn person?” I asked, looking him over. He hummed a laugh, shaking his head. “Not really,” he admitted, swallowing the piece with effort. I shrugged, handing the bin back to Dexter once I was done. The movie was about an hour and a half, and once it was over, I was happy to stretch. It was alright; not terrible, but not stellar, either. I hadn’t even noticed to see if Dimitri was paying attention, but Emma was babbling on and on about how great it was and how cute the main actor was. I rolled my eyes, biting my lip in uncertainty as we walked to the main lobby. Emma wanted me to invite Dimitri over my house with the rest of us, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to. She gave me “the look”, and I sighed, listening as she told Remi and Dexter they were welcome back at my place. I turned to Dimitri, leaning to one side. “My friends and I are going back to my house; my parents are at some business dinner until late. You’re…welcome to come over if you want.” I put my hand to the side of my mouth, speaking quickly as I watched Emma.
