Kat nearly squealed when I came walking out of the house, though I had no idea why. I didn’t think she would’ve been able to hear our conversation, and even if she had, there was nothing “cute” about it. “What’re you so smiley for??” I asked, looking around as if a giant unicorn or bunny would pop out to explain her behavior. I wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad thing. From our experience, unicorns weren’t real, and even if they were, I highly doubted they were magical.

“You think she’ll join us???” “I dunno! I just said that, Kat. I mean…for our sake, I kinda’ hope she does, but whatever.” “That and because she’s hot.” “I’m not Chris, okay?” I growled, stalking back to the car. She skipped, and I was almost embarrassed to be seen with her. I drove home in silence, refusing to acknowledge anything Kat said about Ariel and I…together. We were home when she finally asked a reasonable question. “So, she’s coming over tomorrow?” “Yeah, I think so…” “Great! Emrick will be so happy!! You think she’ll have made up her mind by then?” “I hope so, but I dunno…” Kat nodded, going to visit Conwenna and give her her dinner. Chris was listening to his usual loud music in his room, and I went to the fridge to grab my thermos.

Leikos was lying on the floor beside the table, and his tail wagged as he saw me. I crouched to pet him with a small smile. “Hey…” I murmured, watching as he lapped Ariel’s scent up like a piece of meat. “She’s not here today…you’ll see her tomorrow,” I muttered, grabbing my thermos and heading back to my room. Tasha wasn’t there, surprisingly, but I heard and sensed her in the other room, wrestling with one of the other wolves…probably Lupa or Onai. I layed on my bed and listened to my ipod, tapping my foot and swaying my head. Seeing Ariel listen to hers so frequently made me want to listen to mine, and I forgot how relaxing music could be.

I had hardly seen Scarlet, and wondered if Emrick had put her up to a mission. I remembered the vampire I had told Ariel about earlier, and wondered if she was out tracking it. I thought it was weird for it not to have been with a coven, and felt deep within my gut that this was just the beginning. I hoped Ariel wouldn’t be so careless in the future, and hoped she stayed away from the woods, no matter how many wolves decided to visit her. It wasn’t safe for her; she couldn’t defend herself against even a newborn. I shook the thought, nearly having a heart attack as I heard Kat shriek. I raced to her, meeting her in the same second. She turned to me, eyes bright. “Connie’s having her puppies!!!” She squealed, and I let out a deep breath. “Christ Kat, I thought you were dying!” Emrick and the others were in the room a second later, armed with towels and God knows what else.

Kat helped Emrick deliver the puppies, the rest of us wiping them clean and rubbing them warm. I somehow knew Ariel would enjoy this, and made it a point to take her here to see the puppies tomorrow, since Conwenna seemed to like her. Overall, there were six puppies, all alive and healthy, like most of our wolves’ offspring. It was rare that they were unfit to live, but it did happen from time to time. Emrick looked at them as if they were his own children, and gave Conwenna a congratulatory kiss on the head. The puppies were all different colors, except for the twins. The puppies’ father, Ivaylo, came in to nestle with Conwenna, and the family fell asleep shortly, which suddenly made me tired. We left them in peace, Kat nearly exploding with  happiness. I could all but taste it, and it was radiating from her in strong, thick waves.

“Weren’t they adorable?!?!? Don’t you like wolves more?!?” She asked Chris, looking up at him. He shrugged, looking away. “I…guess they were cute…” Kat grinned, and Scarlet rolled her eyes. Once Kat and Chris went into the main hall, I went over to Scarlet. “Were you on a vampire mission?” I asked, walking beside her as she went into the kitchen. “Yeah. It’s weird. I smelled more than one, and even tracked their scent for a while, but I couldn’t find them.” She looked me over for a minute before speaking, taking a sip from her thermos. “I think Ariel is in much more danger than we had anticipated. I don’t think this is over.” A quick moment of panic overtook me, but I calmed myself shortly, taking a deep breath. “I…I know what you mean. I think she’s in trouble too,” I whispered, the two of us quiet for a long time afterward. “Should…Should I warn her?” I asked, unable to meet her gaze. I saw her shrug from the corner of my eye. “I’m not sure if that’s the wisest choice. She might panic, or even try to fight them.” I nodded, imagining Ariel charging toward a group of thirsty vampires. I shuddered as if I was cold.

“I haven’t told Emrick yet. I have a feeling he’ll want us to watch her, and I don’t want to baby sit. We have enough on our plate as it is,” she growled, crossing her arms. “But Ariel’s the future of the Guardians. If she’s killed, we’re dead.” The realization of actually being dead finally hit me, and I was a lot more passionate than I had been the other day. I sure as hell didn’t want to die, and I knew no one else did, either. “Still. We could protect her here. Or…I dunno. Having all our agents out to watch her sleep is just stupid.” I sort of agreed, but at the same time, I kind of thought it was necessary. “You should go and tell Emrick. He’d appreciate the news,” I murmured, yawning as I stretched. “Night, Scarlet. See ya’ in the mornin’.” “Night,” she muttered, and I was off to my room. Leikos was surprisingly lying on my floor, and I pet him for a few minutes before showering, changing, and going to bed. He was still there when I was done, and I figured he wanted to smell Ariel, which was really creepy. I tried to ignore the nagging fears poking around in the back of my mind, but it was much harder than I had thought. Sleep overcame me shortly, and I hoped Ariel wasn’t stupid enough to provoke an angry, thirsty vampire…
