Your nightmares

follow you

 like a shadow,

forever.

Frisk

I shift my shoulder against the mattress, trying to find a comfortable position. With a pressure against my collarbone, I become still. Maybe somehow through sheer Determination I can fall asleep like this. I'll wake up with a kink in my neck for sure, but I don't care. I just want to go to sleep.

That evening was long and tense. G virtually silent besides a few biting comments and sharp retorts to my simple questions. We end up taking the mattress of Papyrus's race car bed and dragging it downstairs. I at first offer to share it with G, but thankfully he declines and opts to crash on the couch. We sat on the couch, silently sharing a can of cold ravioli and a single chocolate granola bar from a package that I found in a drawer. The package now rests in an orange backpack with six other cans of discovered ravioli plus five cans of chicken noodle soup. The backpack G found in Papyrus's closet. After the pitiful dinner, G tells me I should go to bed if I want to keep my face pretty.

The pressure against my collarbone becomes bothersome, so I shift again. This time, I stare at the ceiling, lacing my fingers over my stomach. The cold air makes me shiver, but I remain in my stretched position. I didn't want to touch any blankets that belong to Papyrus or Sans.

Sans... Sans is gone.

Those dark words twisting through my brain for the hundredth time. I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to push the thought from my head.

No, it can't be possible. He's right there.

I turn my head, looking over at the couch. G's hood is pulled up, the black material and white fur hiding his face. His arms rest against his torso, his legs stretching across the couch without a blanket. His torso moves gently, air going through magical unseen lungs.

Sans can't be gone... he can't be...

I close my eyes and let myself drift to a happier place. A memory popping up in my mind.

It was the fourth of July, all the monsters were well prepared for the holiday. The day had been filled with barbeques and swimming. Until dusk covered the land and the exploding show in the sky began.

I was twenty years old, and Sans and I had already been on a few dates. Toriel was anxious and overbearing. Papyrus was enthusiastic about our new found relationship, mostly because Sans was happier. (A secret that Papyrus made me swear upon my soul that I would never tell to anyone, especially Sans) Undyne was excited too, saying 'It's about time that nerd took you out.'

We snuck up to the roof, watching the fireworks light up the sky. On the grassy lawn of Papyrus's and San's house, all our friends and family sat and awed at the show. Our legs dangled over the edge, and I leaned back on my arms. I took in the colorful explosions with wide eyes. Sans sat beside me, looking up at the sky with a soft grin.

"Hey... Frisk." His husky voice said.

"Yeah?" I asked, not taking my eyes off the fireworks.

"Knock knock."

I smiled under a red burst of light. "Who's there?"

"Al." There's a soft tone to his voice, something I haven't heard from him before.
