Chapter 1 - Detention

"Kayla! Run!" my best friend Ashton Turner, shouted as he dashed past me.

I didn't think twice as I sprinted down the corridor of Donaldson Private School behind him.

"Who are we running from?" I asked Ash breathlessly.

"Mrs. Peterson," he panted over his shoulder. "I placed a spider in her lunch bag."

"So why am I running," I asked confusedly

"I don't feel like going to detention alone," he shouted smugly.

I stopped instantly, out of breath. "What?" I screeched. My green eyes shooting angry sparks at his broad back. "I can't get detention again this week. That will be my second tardy."

Ash also stopped breathing heavily. His dirty blond hair disheveled. "That's too bad 'cause you're going to get detention since you started running with me," his blue eyes twinkling.

I groaned and let out an exasperated sigh. I looked behind me and saw Principal Hicks and Mrs. Peterson pointing at us. I groaned again before turning to Ash.

"Run, you ass wipe. If I am getting detention then I am going to make this worth it," I said as I took off with full speed to the schools entrance.

I glimpsed Ash's toothy grin before he took off behind me this time.

"There is a reason why I love you,"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah,"

I sat in the back row of detention, watching the clock tick down the time to the end of the school day. I was bored out of my mind.

'Ash owed me big for this.'

I blew at a lock of my wavey red hair as it fell over my eye before returning my attention to the angelic devil who was sound asleep snoring next to me.

Mr. Ruben, out detention supervisor, was reading a newspaper and didn't care much what we did so long as we were quiet.

The speaker above the door crackled. "Mr. Ruben. Mr. Ruben. You're needed in the teachers' lounge."

Mr. Ruben folded his paper before dropping it on his desk. He let out a sigh before looking in our general direction.

"Stay here. I'll be right back," he instructed before leaving the class.

I didn't respond and Ash was out cold. As soon as he was out the door I kicked at Ash's seat. He got up with a start and almost toppled over but, unfortunately, he managed to gain his balance and gave me a dirty look.

'Why'd you do that for?"

"Because you miserable toad, you got me into this mess and you have the gall to sleep while I twiddle my thumbs." I shouted at him angrily.

He rolled his eyes before focusing on me once more.

"So, any big plans for tomorrow night?" he asked, changing the topic. Tomorrow was my sixteenth birthday.

'God, sixteen,' I thought. 'It can't be that time already.'

I've now started to live my life and I was no way ready to give up my freedom, especially to a "mate".

Yup you've guessed it. I am a werewolf. But I am not any ordinary werewolf. I don't belong to a pack. My family and I  live around humans in Wyoming. The closest pack is the Blood Moon Pack which is about four kilometers from here but their pups mainly attended Public School.

There are only four members of that pack at my school, the alpha's twin sons Don and Draven Jacobs and their best friends and betas to be, Marcus William and Jack Stone. Mainly, they leave me alone seeing as I was considered a 'rogue' and they tolerated me on what they deemed, their 'territory'.

When I was a baby, our family left my father's pack, the Fire Star Pack. According to my dad, Alpha Redman was a hard alpha and my dad couldn't remain under his ruling since he feared that he would eventually hurt my mom and me. So we left England and came to America to start a new life.

We were presented to the now Alpha of the Blood Moon Pack, Alpha Bradford, and he accepted us on his 'territory' but we lived separate lives from the pack.

Life wasn't bad since we lived mainly among humans. They didn't know about us and it felt good to be 'normal'. The Blood Moon Pack left us alone, even though they would throw words for us every now and then, when we meet them in the human town. We always ignored the remarks and went on with our lives.

Ash was human, but he knows what I am. He is my best friend and we tell each other everything. Even though sometimes he acts like he has a stick up his ass.

"Yo! Kayla!" he said, jolting me out of my thoughts. "You ok? I lost you for a moment there."

"Yeah, I'm fine," I told him. I remember what he asked me previously and I remember the fake ID I currently had it in my wallet, "How about going clubbing. I feel like partying tomorrow."

Ash gave me an evil smile. I knew that smile. It means to run for the hills and don't look back. "I know I was going to regret asking this but, what are you planning Ashton Turner?"

He changed his facial expression to that of an angel. "Oh, nothing. What makes you think I am planning anything?"

"I know that bloody look mate. That bloody look has gotten me in enough trouble for the past fifteen years." I told him.

He grinned like a Cheshire Cat. I can actually see little devil horns protruding out of his skull.

"What time to pick you up, tomorrow night," he asked trying to change the topic.

I gave him a dirty look before sighing. "How about 8:30. Mom and dad should be asleep by then. I can meet you at your place," "I told him since he lived not far from me.

He nodded but I can see the gears in his head turning. He was up to something and I have a feeling I was going to kill him.

We finally left school and walked home. I hated the school bus. All you hear was kids squawking and it just gave me a headache. I could do without that, thank you very much.

We reached our street twenty minutes later. Ash stopped by my driveway and asked. "Same time tomorrow morning?"

I nodded my head, "Yeah same time tomorrow. Ash, promise me you won't do anything stupid tomorrow," I begged. "I just want a normal day. That's all."

He looked at me seriously for a couple seconds before responding quietly, "But you're not a normal girl." He then spoiled it by grinned and lifted his eyebrows sinisterly, "Life's too short for normal."

I groaned and turned my back to him, dragging my feet as I walked up the drive way. I know tomorrow was going to be life changing in more ways than one. I just wanted to hold it back as long as possible.
