Chapter 20 - Operation: Make Her BURN - Confession of Guilt
Kayla P.O.V
I opened sleep filled eyes and smiled as I spotted a single white tiger lily on the pillow next to me.
My smile became bitter sweet as I recalled that I was still avoiding Don. It wasn't due to lack of trying on his behalf. Oh, trust me; he has been trying plenty in the past 4 days. But despite his best efforts, I was still avoiding him.
I sat up and held the lily close and inhaled deeply. I knew I was being foolish by ignoring him, but I couldn't help it. And to make matters worse, after what happened yesterday between Draven and I, I felt so guilty. The things he said, the things we did, Draven opened a molten floodgate of desire within me.
My mind ran back to Don and I sighed. Don has been nothing but sweet and considerate to me from the very the beginning. He made me feel how a girl supposed to feel with her first major crush. He made me feel special and cherished. He also had the power to set my body on fire as his lips fluttered over the beating pulse at my wrist.
In my mind Don deserved better than me. If he ever found out what happened between Draven and I it would crush him. I didn't want to hurt him, so I did the next best thing. I continued to avoid him.
I sighed as I got up and placed the lily in a vase of fresh water by my bed. I then proceeded to get ready for the day ahead.
I went down the stairs dressed in black leggings and a pinks shirt and walked to the kitchen. I'd decided to make breakfast for everyone since Ash started complaining that I wasn't fulfilling my end of the bargain.
As I entered the kitchen door, I froze when I saw Don sitting behind the kitchen counter.
"What are you doing here so early?" I demanded rudely.
"Good morning to you too, sweetheart," Don smirked as his gaze ran over me from head to toe. "I was just waiting on coffee," he said, nodding his head in the direction of the coffeemaker.
"Oh," I said as my cheeks bloomed with embarrassment. I then sniffed the air and frowned. I couldn't smell Don's scent, and I couldn't recall scenting Don scent in my room earlier this morning either.
"Why can't I smell your scent?" I asked curiously.
"Because of this," he said as he pulled out a small bottle with a clear liquid from his pocket.
"What is it?" I asked eyeing the bottle.
"I really don't know what it's called," he admitted sheepishly. "Mora made it for us to disguise our scent. It has come in handy a couple of times when we've had unwanted intruders on our territory. It's very potent. I could be standing behind another wolf and they won't even know I am there unless I make it known."
"So why are you wearing it?" I asked confusedly
He then looked me square in the eye and said seriously, "You've been avoiding me."
I flushed and looked away as guilt once again assaulted me. I'd walked as far as the fridge before I was twirled around to meet Don's angry eyes.
I felt a fusion of sparks and heat as his hands continued to hold my wrist and his other hand came up and touched my cheek.
"Why have you been avoiding me Kayla?" he asked gently as his eyes soften. "And why do I only see guilt and sorrow in your eyes?"
I tried to pull away but Don's hold tightened, keeping me in place.
"I'm sorry," I whispered helplessly as tears broke the surface of my eyes.
"Sorry?" he asked confusedly as he searched my face for some clue as to what I was talking about. "Sorry for what?"
"I didn't mean for it to happen," I babbled. "He barged in and demanded that I go with him and then he carried me through a secret tunnel and to the waterfall and we were talking and he had the audacity to ask me if I was ever with anyone else and so I lied and told him yes and he got mad and - GOD!" I groaned out loud before looking at him again. "I'm so sorry." I whispered.
"What did Draven do?" he demanded as his eyes remained locked on mine.
"He-he kissed me," I said softly as my eyes pleaded with him to understand.
"What else," he grounded out.
I swallowed the lump in my throat before saying, "he touched me."
His hand tightened on my arm as his jaw ticked.
"Where?" he demanded. "What else?"
My body heated with arousal as I recall the feel of Draven's fingers touching me intimately.
Don's low growl brought me back to present and my heavy gaze locked on to his dark eyes once more.
"No wonder Draven couldn't control himself around you," Don said as his gaze at my parted lips. His heated gaze then met mine. "I could only imagine what would happen when you go into heat."
I blushed profusely as I looked away.
"I'm sorry," Don said gently as he caressed my cheek. "I didn't mean to say that. And there is no need for you to apologize for what happened between you and Draven."
"But we -" I started to say in surprise.
"I've changed my mind. I don't want to know," Don said through clenched teeth. He then relaxed as he continued to tell me calmly. "Draven is also your mate. It's only natural you would be attracted to him. What I really have a problem with is that you've been avoiding me. I've missed seeing you and spending time with you," he admitted.
I once again felt foolish for avoiding him. And I had to admit, I've missed him as well.
"Spend the day with me," Don cajoled, breaking into my thoughts. "I don't have anything pressing today and I was planning to check on the kids later today."
I smiled to myself as their cute faces came to my mind. I wouldn't mind seeing them again. "Are you sure?"
"Positive." He assured me.
"In that case, I'd like that."
