Chapter 17 – Wrath of the Guardian

Draven’s P.O.V

Lightning flashed as it lit up the night sky.  This was no ordinary storm. I could smell it in the air. There was no rain and there was no thunder. There were just bright flashes of lightning which frequently lit up the heavens above. The strange weather started as I was walking home from Kattana’s place.

Dad and Don were on the front porch waiting for me and I could tell right away that they were both royally pissed. But my mind wasn't on them right now. I was desperate to find Kayla and explain to her what happened.

As I approached the front door, dad stepped in my way and restrained me from entering. A low threatening growl tore from me as I met my dad's angry gaze.

"Relax son," dad commanded. "You rushing in there isn't going to help the situation."

"Where is she?" I demanded heatedly.

"With Ash," my dad replied darkly. I tried to go around him but he pushed me away from the door again. "Draven give her some time and space right now. She is too angry and hurt to accept any form of an apology from you. What the hell really happened anyway?"

I backed away from the door and frustratedly sat on the porch swing. I told them everything and as I talked, their faces remained hard, as if carved in stone. Especially Don’s. He didn’t say a word. He just stood there and glared at me the whole time.

Kayla’s stricken face haunted me until I felt as if I was going insane. I groaned as my head fell into my hands and the full weight of what happened weighed down on me. There was no way Kayla was going to forgive me for this. I never expected my words to one day bite me in the butt, but it did, and now I have to pay the price for it.

I was still on the porch with dad and Don when Ash finally came downstairs. He just looked at me with cold, hard eyes as he addressed my dad.

“Bradford, Kayla's asleep,” he finally said. “She should be out for the rest of the night. I’d advise you to keep your sons away from her for now. She needs some time for herself to think things through.”

He then walked down the stairs and into the forest without a backward glance.

It was now 11:30 pm and the house was silent. I was lying on my bed fully clothed waiting for Don.

‘You ready to go?’ Don asked.

‘I’ll meet you downstairs in a minute,’ I replied as I threw on my jacket.

When I left my room, instead of going straight down to meet Don, I found myself in the eastern wing. I stood outside Kayla’s room for a moment before opening her door soundlessly and walking in. Her room was dark but I made out her sleeping form clearly in the darkness. My gut twisted in pain as I looked down at  her tear streaked face.

I knew I blew it big time with her and chances are she doesn't want anything to do with me but I needed to come up with a way to fix all of this. I refuse to accept her decision to be with my brother. I needed a chance to prove to her that I deserve her and that I am not a complete bastard like she thinks I am.

As I left her room, I closed her door with a soft click and made my way downstairs to meet Don.

I found him leaned against the railing of the back porch waiting impatiently. Lightning struck again, lighting up the night sky once more.

“What took you so long?” Don demanded irritably.

“I needed to check on Kayla,” I told him softly as I passed him and went down the stairs.
