[Chapter 3- Far Away]

---

"Jihyun, listen-"

"No. Tell me an honest answer. Don't work your way around it", Jihyun interrupts and all the mother can do is sigh in response. She leans forward and places her elbows on her knees, bringing her hand towards her face to hide it in her hands. "Yes. Yes, you're adopted."

Jihyun's eyes widen as her mother looks up from her hands. Sympathy displays onto her eyes and anger boils in Jihyun's gut. How could her mother and father lie to her? How could they have lied for all these years; claiming that they are her parents or that they are her flesh and blood? Her fists clench by her sides and her anger begins to increase.

"You lied to me my entire life", Jihyun says and she surprises herself for how strong her voice had come out. Her mother shakes her head quickly and stands up from the couch, about to reach out for Jihyun's hands.

"Don't touch me!" Jihyun takes a step back and her mother watches with flickering guilty eyes as her daughter stumbles away.

"Jihyun you'll still always be my dau-"

"I don't want to hear it."

With those final words, Jihyun storms up the stairs and leaves her mother who's currently still in the family room- probably very bewildered and upset. She runs down the hallway and walks into her room, slamming the door shut behind her.

Looks like there's going to be another night with no dinner for Jihyun.

---

A knock on her door disturbs Jihyun's sleep and her heavy eye lids lift. She slowly sits up as another tap on her door is heard and she grumbles about how it's too late to be up.

"Who is it?" Jihyun mutters out as she walks to the door, resting her forehead on the wooden surface. She hears another tap and a tiny squeaky voice on the other side. "Jihyun... I'm scared..."

Jihyun sighs softly and smacks her chapped lips together, rubbing her eyes with one hand as she grasps the doorknob with the other.

"Alright Mija, what's wrong?" Jihyun says in a groggy voice as she opens the door. Her little sister stands in front of her with teary eyes and a teddy bear clung to her chest with trembling hands.

"Are you my sister?"

Her little sisters words spiral into Jihyun's no longer groggy thoughts. What is she supposed to say to that? How is she going to reply to her little sister? She can't just say that they're not related because she doesn't want to hurt her sister in any way.

"Of course I'm your sister. Who else would I be?"

The little girl smiles a toothy grin and hugs her bear closer to her chest, looking at her older sister with shining eyes. "Can I sleep with you in your bed, Jihyun?"

Jihyun's response to her small sisters request is moving out of the doorway and welcoming her sister into her room with a small smile. Mija practically jumps in joy and pads her way into the room with excited but sleepy eyes. She runs to her older sisters bed and leaps onto it, already snuggling into the covers.

Seeing her sister like this causes Jihyun's aching chest to cease, a sudden warmth being replaced with that loneliness she felt not too long ago.

The one person that's keeping her going is her little sister. Even though they're not related, she still feels like this little girl is her blood related sister. The one person Jihyun will never betray is her younger sister. If she were to ever leave her younger sister, then she knows she would have lowered her self value- or well, what's left of her own value.
