It was after school. My girlfriend and I were walking silently and alone. We weren't holding hands. This was a good sign. She was going to break up with me today.
She said, "Kai, you know you're a sweet boy, right."I nodded.
She continued, "I don't want to hurt you by saying this."
I said, "It's okay. Go ahead and say it."
She said nervously, "I want to break up with you." She stopped walking and looked at me with a pitiful look.
I gave her a soft smile and said, "It's okay."
She said seemed suprised from my reaction. She said, "Are you sure?"
I nodded, "Really. I'm sure." I gave her a hug just to ease her. It really was alright. I didn't want to be with her in the first place. I never had eyes for her, but I did have eyes for Krysta. I didn't have to deal with stupid drama witg her.
She said, "Well, you are a sweet guy. I have to go!" She went off and jogged somewhere.
I felt relief in my chest as I was finally single again, but I felt a twinge of loneliness.Oh, well. It was time for me to get home and take care of my siblings.
Aftet the repetition of helping out my siblings, it was night time. I got in bed and sighed in relief.
I checked my phone. Nobody texted me. I was hoping to fine Krysta's text. Maybe she wanted to just say goodnight, or maybe she had a problem.
I stared at my phone until I dozed off asleep.
The next morning, I did all the things I needed to do. I walked with Hannah to the bus stop and met Krysta there.
She greeted, "Hey, Kai."
I replied, "Hey. How are you?"
Krysta gazed at her cellphone and said, "I'm fine.
I said, "That's good." I noticed that she seemed so much brighter. She kept looking at her cellphone. I asked, "Are you waiting for a text?"
Krysta said, "Oh. Yeah. I am." She said that as if she didn't recognize that I was there. "Nick and I are texting." She looked back at her phone eagerly.
I was happy to see her happy, but she could've at least paid attention to me. I'm actually right here.
Krysta glanced back at me. She asked, "Are you alright?"
I said giving her a convincing smile, "I'm fine. You just look beautiful when you smile."
In response, she blushed. She said, "Aw come on, Kai! Stop making me blush!" She bumped me with her elbow.
I laughed, "It's true." Don't call me shady. I knew complimenting her would get her attention. I was used to her paying attention to me rather than Nick. I was crying for attention. I just wanted her at the moment.
That was what a friend would want, right?
