Chapter 18

Lady-In-Waiting Maddie's P.O.V.

I excused myself from dinner as soon as I could. I wanted to get to the garden as soon as possible after dinner. I've been looking forward to the date all day. I walked fast and my purple dress flows behind me. When I finally make it to the garden I slow my pace and look around for Holden.

"Maddie?" I voice says from behind me. I turn around to see Holden standing only a few feet behind me. I smile and walk towards him.

"Are you ready?" He asks.

"Yes," I say trying to contain my excitement. "Where are we going?"

"It's a surprise." He grins and takes my hand. "I'll lead you there."

He brings me away from the garden and away from the palace. We keep walking until we get near a creek. At the creek he lets go of my hand and walks behind a tree. I see him grab something. When he walks back to me he has a huge blanket, which he spreads out for us to sit on.

I sit down and Holden sits beside me.

"The view is gorgeous!" I saw in awe.

"Yeah, it really is." Holden says.

"How has training been?" I ask.

"It's going good." he smiles. "I have complete faith that we will be able to protect our kingdom."

"I hope so." I laugh. "I would rather not die in two days."

"Don't worry." He says. "You won't die."

"You can't die either." I grin. "I forbid it."

"I didn't know you could forbid things." He laughs.

"I can now!" I say back.

"Watch the sun." Holden says. "It's beautiful when it sets."

I look over and see the sun just peeking over the horizon. Almost completely gone. When the last ray of sunshine vanishes I look over at Holden.

He looks at me. "I should take you back soon." He says getting up. "I know it was a short date but I have night duty tonight."

"It's okay," I stand up. "I had a really good time."

We walk back to the palace. Hopefully when this war's over we will have a longer date. But for now we have more important things to worry about. We get back to the garden and I grab Holden's hand.

"I'll see you soon." I say.

"Yes, I'll see you soon." He smiles. I rise on my tip toes and kiss his cheek. Then I go back inside the palace.

When I get inside, I decide to go to Bridget's room. When I get there I see her sitting on her bed reading.

"Hey Bridget!" I says jumping on her bed.

"Hey, Maddie." She sits the book down. "How was the date?"

"Short but sweet!" I answer back. "How's your book?"

"Pretty good!" She answers. "Anything to get my mind off the war."

"Agreed." I say. "I'm exhausted."

"Same." Bridget answers. "If you want to go to bed, then I'll see you in the morning."

"Okay," I answer. "Thanks. I'll see you tomorrow." I hug her and go to my room.

I throw on my sleep gown and lie down in my bed. I finally fall asleep with thoughts of Holden and the war flowing through my mind.
