Chapter 20
Lady-In-Waiting Maddie's P.O.V.
"Come on! Come on! Come on!" Bridget yells dragging me through the halls.
"I'm going as fast as I can!" I yell back. "You know I can't run fast!"
"We are almost there so stop complaining!" Bridget says bringing me outside into a new garden. "Here we are." She stops. I look around and notice a big blanket with a picnic basket on it.
"Yay!" I exclaim. "Are we having a picnic?"
"Yes! We are!" Bridget answers. "Since the war is almost here, I thought that we should get our minds off it for a couple minutes. So I had the cooks prepare us a big picnic. But guards have to join us so we don't get captured."
"Okay, that's fine." I answer. "Who is coming?"
"Hello, Lady-In-Waiting." I hear the head guard say. "Mind if I join you?"
"Of course." I answer. "We always enjoy your company, Ryan."
"Thank you." He sits down. Then he looks over at Bridget weirdly. I can't tell if it's because he likes her or if he's just being weird.
Bridget opens the picnic basket and passed out the food. We enjoy the fruit and sandwiches, then we finish it off with chocolate covered strawberries.
Ryan looks around uncomfortably. "Do you mind if I talk to Bridget in private for a minute?" He asks me.
"Of course!" I smile. " I'll just walk away for a minute." I wink at Bridget. "Be safe!" I tell her.
"Always." She smiles back.
I walk around the field beside the garden for awhile. Then I sit and wait and wait and wait. Then Holden comes running up to me.
"Where have you been?" He asks looking extremely worried.
"Bridget and I had a picnic. Why?" I say confused.
"It's my shift to guard you two." He says looking around. "I told you that at breakfast."
"But Ryan said that you two switched shifts." I say.
"No..." Holden says. "Where's Bridget?"
"She... went with Ryan...." I say as I finally figure it out. "Bridget!!!"
I run and run. Holden runs ahead of me since he's faster. We both scream her name. I run faster than I have ever before. Tears start streaming down my face when I hear it.
A scream. It rings through my ears and I know immediately whose it is. Bridget.
"NO!" I scream. We run and run until we get to the gate. That's where I see Ryan throwing Bridget over it.

"Emily!" I scream running down the halls still crying. "Emily, help!"
I run into the dining room to see Emily and Harry talking.
I barge through the doors with fresh tears in my eyes.
Emily stands up when she sees me. "What's wrong Maddie?"
"I'm so sorry." I sniffle.
She grabs my shoulders. "Maddie, calm down and tell me what's wrong."
Harry looks around the room. "Where's Bridget?" He asks.
I cry harder. "Ryan asked to talk to her in private. I walked away." I sniffle. "The next thing I know Holden came to me and told me that he was supposed to be guarding us. Then we saw Ryan throwing Bridget over the fence." I get out and then break down in tears again. Holden walks over and wraps me in a tight hug.
Emily gasps and puts her hand over her mouth. Then she closes her eyes and when she opens them tears start flowing from her eyes. Harry rushes to her side and holds her. She rests her head against his chest.
"Call the guards." Harry says. "We need to get her back. I don't care what it takes."
Emily looks up. "Holden, please go get your best and get ready. The battle might just be early."
"Yes, princess." Holden answers her. Then he kisses my forehead. "I'm so sorry Emily."
"Me to." She answers. Then he leaves. Emily straightens up and wipes her eyes. "I think that I might have a plan to get her back."
