Chapter 15.
My throat tightened, the sky darkened and lighting struck at that moment.
Okay, that might have been a small exaggeration, but still, I did feel quite queasy.
“What?” I asked, meekly. My palms were going sweaty and my throat really did feel as if it was tightening.
“Sash, do you?” Elaine looked at me, curiosity in her eyes, knowing well that I heard her the first time. I fidgeted on the bed, having no clue in the world what to say.
Did I like him? Maybe a little, but it could just be the fact that we were stuck in the same house and that I was missing home. Anyway, it’s not like we would ever go out. He was much too preoccupied with Alexia anyway.
I opened my mouth, fully ready for a load of nonsense and excuses to come out, when the door of the room we were in opened. I looked up and met the eyes of none other that Alexia.
Saved by the bitch.
“Oh, ehm, am I interrupting something?” Alexia asked sweetly, obviously a front for Elaine. Elaine glanced at me before smiling at Alexia and jumping up off the bed.
“No, of course not sweetie. I was just leaving, lots to do!” Elaine said brightly. Alexia smiled at Elaine but you could see in her eyes it was fake. When was her smile not fake? “Now, don’t forget we have the fittings in an hour and we can’t miss this one!” Elaine told us. I felt a stab of guilt build inside me but Elaine sent me a reassuring smile and I felt a bit better. “Not that I’m blaming anyone but we really have to make this one, we are cutting it very close!” I let out a small laugh, Elaine had always left things to the last minute and it was no surprise that she wasn’t very organised with the wedding. The one thing I admired about her though was that she didn’t panic. It was 3 days until her wedding and she hadn’t a care in the world. With one last smile, Elaine left the room, leaving me and Alexia alone.
“Why so glum, cousin? “ Alexia asked, putting emphasis on the word cousin. I grimaced. We weren’t cousins- yet. “It couldn’t be perhaps that Jamie likes me, and not some pathetic American girl?” She asked, rhetorically, her tone mocking. I clenched my teeth, a pang of jealousy hitting me in my chest.
Calm Sash. She is provoking you.
“No, Jamie and I are friends. Why would I be jealous?” I asked her, giving the best smile I could muster. Which, really wasn’t very good.
“Hmph, didn’t really seem that way this morning, did it?” She asked, letting out a bitter laugh. Something about Alexia’s tone was telling me that she was the main part of why Jamie wasn’t talking to me.
That girl seriously had some issues.
“What did you say to Jamie?” I asked, well more demanded. Alexia, for a moment looked slightly taken back but plastered her face with a sickening smile.
“I just told him how things were. How you and him were friends and how you definitely weren’t interested in him.” I stared dumbly at Alexia as she spoke these words. Why would she say that? It still didn’t explain why Jamie wasn’t talking to me.
