Chapter 4- Dad You Hate Friends.
I roughly threw some clothes into my suitcase, ranting under my breath. First, he makes me go to the wedding. Then with Jamie? He would be lucky if we both came back alive.
“You nearly packed kiddo?” My Dad asked me, while walking into my room. I turned around and glared at him. “Okay. I’ll take that as a no.” He said, while taking a step back with his hands up.
That had been going on ever since he had sprung the news that Jamie was coming with me to England. I was 17 for christ’s sake. I think I would be fine on a 6 hour plane journey. It wasn’t like I was going to Australia for crying out loud! I hadn’t really spoken to my dad much these few days, but he continued to make pointless conversation.
“So, you need anything, ehm, toiletries wise?” My dad said, looking very awkward and uncomfortable. I swear there was a slight blush on his cheeks! I rolled my eyes.
“Dad. Get. Out.” I said through clenched teeth.
"Okay I get the hint. You don’t want to talk.” He said, and left the room. The hint? Could I make it any more obvious?
My suitcase was getting pretty full and I was trying to fit another shoe into it, with no avail.
“AHH.” I flopped onto my bed and grabbed my pillow and screamed. Why? Why did I ever have to meet Jamie? What did I do that was so bad, that I had to be punished and meet the ass of a boy?
I threw my pillow across my room and walked out of my room. I was sick of packing. I walked down-stairs to the sitting room and collapsed onto the couch and turned on the t.v. I smiled when I saw an episodes of Friends was on. Finally, life was looking up.
Just as I was settling in to a good episode of friends, my dad walked in and sat down on the other side of the couch. My dad hated Friends with a passion. Something was definitely up.
I sighed. “What is it you want to say Dad?” I asked, a bored expression on my face. My Dad looked up at me, a guilty expression on his face.
“How do you know I want to say something?” He asked. “Maybe I just want to watch some t.v.” I rolled my eyes.
“Dad, you hate Friends. Now spill.” I told him.
“Well I just want to make amends before you leave for England.” He began. I knew that look oh to well. It was guilt trip time . “And you know that I love you, and I just don't want anything to happen to my only daughter.” He had a sheepish look on his face. I held up my hand, motioning for him to stop talking.
“Oh no Dad. That is not fair. You can not do the guilt trip. It won't work this time. I’m going to stay mad.” I told him, slowly. He had a sad expression on his face, almost like he was disappointed in me. I closed my eyes so I wouldn’t have to look at it.
“Sash, you know I love you and I care about you and I’m getting old and I just want you to be safe and happy. Please forgive your old man.” I peeked open my eyes to see him with a sad smile on his face. Damn him. That was so not fair.
“I hate you. FINE. You’re forgiven.” I told him, still slightly annoyed.
“YES!” He jumped up and fist pumped the air. Sometimes I wondered about him. “Now come here and give your ol’ man a hug.The Woods will be here soon to drive you to the airport. I can’t come as I have to go to work.” He told me as we hugged. Yes tell me this now, while I was unable to do any damage.
A knock on the door interrupted our hug.
“That’ll be them now. Go up and get your stuff and I’ll let them in.” My dad told me.
I walked up the stairs and grabbed my suitcase and bag. Oh god. I prayed I would make it back alive. I really liked my room. I was starting to feel uneasy about the whole thing. The whole drama with Jamie nearly made me forget that I was going to my mother’s wedding. The woman I hadn’t seen in 4 years.
I reluctantly dragged my suitcase down the stairs and was greeted by an annoyed looking Jamie and a happy looking Chuck.
“All set, sweetie?” Chuck asked me. I really liked Chuck. He was a good man. When my mom first left he was always there for my dad and when we were having a few money problems he was always there to help out. Jamie’s mom was nice to, though I never saw much of her. She was a very stylish woman and was always on some business trip. How two nice people like them had a child like Jamie was beyond me.
I smiled back and nodded my head. Jamie looked like he would rather be anywhere else. The feeling was mutual.
“I hope you take good care of my daughter, son.” My Dad said, in his best intimidating voice, which failed because he burst out laughing. Jamie walked over to me and put his arm around my shoulders, squeezing me just a little bit too tight.
“Don’t worry Shane, I’ll take good care over her. We’ll have a blast.” Jamie said, a bit too chirpy with a stupid grin on his face. I rolled my eyes.
What did I do to deserve this?
