Chapter 16.

A few hours and countless dress later- Elaine chose the bridesmaid’s dresses. With a lot of help from Ms. Debrish, she settled for elegant, knee length purple dresses which, surprisingly everyone liked.

We arrived home sometime early in the evening to an empty house. Where was Chace, Jamie and George? I had a very bad feeling in my gut. Jamie was definitely not Chace and George’s favourite person and Jamie - as tough as he acted- was definitely no match for Chace and George.

“Ehm, Elaine?” I asked, trying to sound casual. This was one of the few times I had actually addressed Elaine, and I was a little shocked on how weird it felt to call her Elaine.

Elaine turned around from where she was routing through a drawer in the kitchen to find a takeaway menu and looked at me, a little shocked.

“Oh, Sasha , I didn’t know who you were there!” She laughed meekly. I could tell that me calling her Elaine was a little upsetting for her. To most people, they might find it normal that I would call her Elaine, but we both could see the reason that lay underneath. I just wasn’t ready for her to be my mother again. But, that said, our relationship was being repaired.

“I was just wondering where the guys were?” I asked, trying to keep the slight panic from my voice. Elaine continued routing through the drawer, as I stood there waiting for a response.

“Found it!” She called out in victory. In her hand I could see a chinese takeaway menu in her hand. I couldn’t help but smile. I remembered how she would get her mind stuck on something and would be completely focused on it until she solved it.

Elaine, almost as if she was just remembering I was there, looked at me sheepishly, a small red tinge on her cheeks.

“Oh, Sash sorry. What were you saying?” She said, letting out a small laugh. I smiled back.

“I was just wondering where the boys were.” I repeated.

“Oh! They went to their suit fittings, but that took a lot less time than ours, so they went out for a drink.” She replied casually.

“A drink? As in alcohol?” I sputtered out. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t some nerd but Jamie was only 17! On top of that, a drunk George was guaranteed to be a lot worse than a sober one.

“Yes, honey. The legal age over here is 18 and Chace and Jamie are both 18 so everything is okay.” She told me, trying to be reassuring.

“Jamie is only 17!” I told her, that wasn’t even the part I was worried about. It was George, but I couldn’t tell Elaine that.

“Oh I’m sure he’ll just have a soft drink then.” She told me, and walked off into the sitting room. Yeah, I’m sure Jamie will turn down a drink, just like I’m sure that the sky is green.

I couldn’t help but notice how much of her accent  Elaine had lost.  She still had the american ‘twang’ but some words she said, sounded undeniably British!
