Becca's P.O.V.
I just can't believe it. That doctor thought I nearly died on purpose? It doesn't even make sense, I was attacked but somehow that's my fault.
I walk into the unfimilliar-scented home that reeks of the fresh paint smell. I find the stench of paint to be coming from the man crouched down in the corner, buttcrack and all.
"Hey!" My father's chirps, turning to face us while hiking up his pants. Woah, I never thought he'd be one of these dads.
"So.. I was thinking maybe we could grill out tonight, maybe even have that special fella of yours over for dinner...." He trails off going back to repainting the walls brown from all the red now splattered along them.
Well at least I know he's trying, he'd rather drop dead than sit and watch a boy be with his daughter.
But not to worry, Matt is just a friend. Inviting him for dinner would be a friendly type nice person thing to do but god do I really want to put him through the hell of a meal with my family.
"Yeah, uhm sure" I smile before running up to my room to call Matt.
I scroll to his contact in my phone and call him.I pull the phone to my ear and he answers right on the first ring.
"Hello?" He asks the smile on his face very evident.
"Hey Matt, Do you happen to be free for dinner tonight?" I question biting down on my lower lip, hoping the answer is yes.
I really want my family to like him. I'm not interested in him being anymore than a friend for now, but that doesn't mean it'll be like that in the future.
"Hmmm I might have to check my schedule" He jokes which causes me to laugh.
"Shut up." I tease and I can still sense him smiling through the line.
"Eh it looks like I'm free tonight and every night after that for the next 60 years" He snickers which causes me to laugh again. His laugh is so contagious.
"Alright so my house, 5 o'clock, be there." I command.
"It's a date." He chirps.
"It's not a date." I remind him.
"It's a date." He chuckles.
"Yeah a date you, my mom, my dad, Seth, half the soccer team and I!!!" I shriek sarcastically.
"Yeah.. it's defenitley a date" He jokes causing me to laugh a lot harder than anticipated and hang up the phone.
I go downstairs and decide to chill down there until the food is done. I walk down to see my mom and dad laying on the couch together.
"Room for me?" I ask before hopping in between the too on the couch, basically laying on the two of them.
"Oh my baby is getting big" My dad groans while throwing his arm over my shoulder giving me a slight hug. I wish things could be like this all the time.
Flashback:
"Honey be patient! I'm trying so hard but you aren't letting me make this better!" My dad shouts.
"You ruined this, You!" My mother screams back as if she's not only a couple feet away from him.
I run my fingers through Seth's hair, holding him close and assuring him it will be alright.
"WE CAN'T MOVE PAST THIS IF YOU BRING IT UP EVERY 5 SECONDS!" My father slams his fist on the table causing Seth to jump in my arms, even though we are in the other room.
My mother tears up as my father calms down. He goes to comfort her but she just shakes him off.
"No, you know I'm over this." She cries as he continues to pull her into his embrace.
Flashback over:
It took a long time for my parents to get past that, all it really had taken was a reality check though.
One break down from Seth and a rant from me and they were joined with us at the hip.
Sure, we might not know if they're truly happy but god I could not take another moment of them not even trying to be.
The doorbell rings which causes me to snap out of it.
"Can you get that?" I ask my mom while standing to my feet and running up the stairs to grab my phone.
My mom opens the door and greets what I suspect to be Matt until, I hear;
"Hi, Shawn it is lovely to meet you." I stop in my tracks in the middle of the hallway and my heartbeat speeds up.
Calm down Becca, you're just being paranoid.
I find my palms begin to get sweaty as I walk down the stairs slowly rejoining my mom.
I look up at the boy in the doorway and am relieved to see the blonde hair brown eyed fool staring back at me with his eyebrows furrowed.
Ah, see you're just crazy.
Matt chuckles what sounds like the fakest laugh while saying;
"My name is Matt." He corrects her and my heart beat quickens again.
No you're nightmare is really coming true.
My mom looks back at me and sends me a confused look.
"I could have sworn your boyfriends name was Shawn." She laughs and I laugh along awkwardly unaware of what to say.
"Sorry, won't you come in, MATT" My mom jokes as the fake-smiling boy comes walking in avoiding eye contact with me at all costs.
My dad comes up from behind me offering Matt a hand shake which he gladly accepts.
"Nice to meet you Shawn." My dad smiles. I face palm myself physically and mentally causing them all to look back at me.
***
The rest of the night is just friendly awkwardness, it would have been a success if only my mom had understood me were not dating and if you know, Matt would look at me.
My dad flips burgers on the grill as my brother and his friends run around the picnic table playing tag.
My mother stands up to join them and I decide to take advantage of this moment to scoot closer to Matt and apologize.
"I am so sorry." I whisper and he sends me a crooked smile.
"It's okay" he laughs it off, even though I know he's lying I just nod along.
What a night.
