Kurapika's POV

I took the first open seat, the one that was closest to me. I felt the eyes of everyone in the class on me, as if I was an alien or something. I didn't let them bother me and tried to pay attention to the teacher.

"Um, sir?" I asked trying to get his attention.

He looked over with a dull expression on his face. "What is it, Kurapika?"

"I don't have a text book yet." I stated plainly.

"Just share with (Y/N) for now. We'll get you a book later." He said, turning back to the board to scribble more things down. "You're gonna want to study hard, we have a test coming up next week. That's more than enough time for you to learn the material so I expect you to participate."

I sighed, first day here and I'm already being told to take a test. I stood up looking around me.

"(Y/N) is the girl sitting in front if you," the teacher said without needing to look back at me.

I looked at (Y/N). When I glanced at her before, I caught her staring at me and she quickly looked away and blushed. She had long dark hair which seemed to cover most of her face. She still avoided eye contact but she slid her text book over to her side, inviting me to share.

Your POV

He moved his chair, taking a seat beside me. I started to blush madly. I was never good with people and I never will be. What do I do? Should I say something to him? I couldn't think clearly, couldn't focus.

"(Y/N), would you like to tell us the answer to number seventeen?" Hitler was speaking to me.

"Yes Mr. Harris," I said quietly. I cleared my voice and tried to speak up a bit more. "It's A to the fifth times b to the second, divided by c square."

Everyone stared at me. I couldn't tell if it was a mean glare or if I had something embarrassing stuck to me. The only thing I knew was that I wanted it to end. I sank lower in my chair.

"Thank you, Miss (Y/N)." He said turning back to the board. "When you simplify monomials, you have to always make sure there are no negatives." He started going on and on.

I started to zone out again but I was able to hear Kurapika mutter something under his breath. "Impressive."

I blushed madly.

I slumped at a lunch table in the cafeteria. No one else sat there, but Leah usually joined me. When we both got our food, we would usually head up to the roof of the building and eat our lunch there.

She was really disappointed when I told her about Kurapika. She really had her hopes up on introducing the two of us.

"So you've spent the entire morning with him, and yet, the two of you haven't spoken a single word." She said in disbelief.

"What was I supposed to say?" I tried defended myself.

We both jumped when we heard Kurapika's voice from the staircase. "Sorry. Did I interrupt something? I was just trying to find a quiet place to eat."

"No You're fine!" Leah chirped. "Go ahead and stay here. We can talk a bit."

I looked at Leah desperately. I knew what she was doing and I didn't like it. She was gonna make me socialize.

"I'm Leah," She introduced smiling. "You've already met (Y/N). She's a bit shy."

"Hi, it's nice to meet you. We have first and second period together, don't we?" He greeted warmly with his hand reach out.

I knew I was supposed to shake it but I felt paralyzed. I barely managed to nod and quickly averted my gaze.

"Thanks for sharing your algebra text book. Your very good with numbers." He said trying to engage conversation.

I lost all words. I nodded again.

At the last moment, Leah came in to save me. She said, "(Y/N) is one of the smartest students in the school. She has the best grades and is pretty much a genius."

"I see," the blonde said cheerfully.

"You're really good at literature." I blurted out.

He looked at me sheepishly. "You really think so?"

I nodded and said in a small voice, "In today's short story that we wrote. Yours was very beautiful and moving. I could feel the pain of your characters and the revenge your character yearned for."

Leah's eyes lit up and Kurapika seemed very interested. It seemed like I surprised them both. I even surprised myself. Those were probably the most words I have ever said to a person, besides Leah. She's the only person I can talk to freely, without clamming up.

We talked for a while, I let the others do most of the talking though. Before we knew it, lunch was over. We all had home room together so we walked together down the hall. Unfortunately, we encountered some of the Queen bees at our schools. They hated my guts for no reason at all and are the main reason I hate coming to school.

"Hey, Kurapika!" A girl with long blonde hair said in a sing song voice. Her name was Ashely. She has perfect hair, body, and face, and has every boy in school drooling all over her. Everything she said was law, she could get away with anything. The hardest work she's ever done in her life was lift her own textbooks. She was loaded rich from her parents.

"Um, Hi," Kurapika responded.

I lowered my head and shrunk behind Kurapika, hoping they wouldn't say anything to me.

"You're really cute." Ashely began in a flirty tone, twirling her hair around her finger. "Since you're new here, me and my girls were wondering if we could show you around school. Maybe hang out sometime."

I saw my chances with Kurapika diminish before my eyes. I felt a sinking feeling inside me. If Kurapika decided to start hanging out with them, the I wouldn't be able to be even remote friends with him.
