"So that's McSteamy" he said with a low voice and a weak smile.
I nodded. I didn't know for how long he had been there watching. Nothing was going on between Mark and I, or with Jimmy. But I still felt like I was cheating on him.
"Do you want to come in?" I asked him.
"No" he turned around and started walking away.
"Wait," I yelled, "why were you here?" He stopped walking. He came back.
"I wanted to talk" he responded dryly.
"About what?"
"About us" he raised his voice.
"Even better, why don't you start with the part where you explain why you're moving and you didn't tell me?" I felt the anger shaking my hands.
"Why don't you tell me why you kissed me the other night and today you're here drunk, about to kiss your doctor friend"
"You kissed me. And then you were acting all chill like nothing happened, and then yesterday I came home to the news that you were leaving, and you didn't even tell me" I felt the warm tears running down my cold cheeks.
His face softened after he saw the tears in my eyes.
He hugged me and I felt myself trying to evade the hug. He let go.
"I didn't want to ruin things" he sighed.
"Well you did, the good thing is that we're only friends" I noticed the pain in his face.
"I'm sorry Jimmy, it's just that I'm hurt too, I don't know what's going on" I ran my hand through my hair.
"I understand" he put his hands inside his pockets and walked away, this time I didn't try to stop him.
I went in the house and walked straight into Effie's room, I had to tell her everything; for some reason I always felt better when I talked to her about my problems. I walked in her room and she was laying on her bed with a bunch of blankets over her.
"It's pretty hot in here Eff, are you okay?" I asked her leaning down to touch her forehead.
"I'm cold" her teeth clattered.
Her face was hot and she was pale. I checked her pulse, which was way below her regular heart rate.
"We have to take you to the doctor" I ran downstairs looking for the girls. I went in the kitchen and saw a neon pink post-it on the fridge.
Alaska I thought. I grabbed it and read it.We went to get some froyo. Effie said she was not feeling well, check on her, doctor. See you later. Alaska.
I immediately called Sloan.
He came to the house and carried Effie to his car. We got to the hospital really fast and we checked her in the emergency room.
They took her in a stretcher and I stayed there looking while they took her away. Being a doctor I never knew how bad it felt to be on the other side, the family of the patient, and now I knew it. I called Alice and told her what happened, they said they would get here in twenty minutes. I also called Jimmy, he said he was going to get the boys. I was sitting in the waiting room and Sloan came to sit by me.
"Uhhmm" he started saying but looked down.
"Anything?" I asked him.
"Do you know if she suffered from any mental illness?" He looked at me with a pained look on his face, something was wrong.
"What?" I asked him confused.
"Some of the tests showed that she has very low serotonin concentrations" he told me. And I knew exactly what that meant, all those attitudes that she called normal, weren't as normal as they seemed. There was actually something wrong going on with her. How didn't we notice?
"Now don't start blaming yourself, this things often go unnoticed" he patted my back as if he had known exactly what I was thinking. He gave me a hug and I started crying.
Jimmy, Alaska and Emma entered running, looking around for me. I stood up and hugged them.
"What happened? How is she?" Jimmy asked looking at Mark.
Sloan explained everything to them and Alaska started crying. Alice and the rest of the boys arrived and suddenly everyone had tears in their eyes.
We were all sitting down not knowing what to do, since they hadn't told us if we could see her or if she was conscious.
Mark had left, leaving me sitting down by Timmy. After a while, he came back.
"I can take you to see her," he murmured, "I'm not supposed to, but a minute won't hurt." I stood up and walked after him, I didn't say anything to the guys and I noticed them staring at us as we walked away. We got to the room 1623. Mark nodded and I opened the door. I saw her there sleeping. I just couldn't take off my mind of all the funny moments we were always having, it's so weird how you never know what is really going on in someone's life. Effie had always been my best friend, and I didn't notice.
"I'm sorry that I failed you Eff" I grabbed her hand.
"Stop acting like I'm dead Helena" I heard her say with a weak voice. I smiled.
"You scared me to death dumb ass!" I laughed trying to get us relaxed.
"I'm good, y'all not getting rid of me that easily, now if you would wait for me outside, I need to sleep some more" she closed her eyes.
"You're so mean Effie!" I rolled my eyes.
"Go home, come see me tomorrow. Eww, can you see how dry my mouth is? Can you give me some water before you go?" She extended her arm pointing to the cup of water on the night stand.
I gave her the water and a hug. I walked out and Mark was waiting for me.
"She was awake" I told him smiling.
"Are you feeling better?" he placed his hand on my back. We walked to the waiting room. Alaska had fallen asleep on Seattle's shoulder. Alice and Ronnie were talking about the whole thing. Emma and Roger were sitting together but they weren't talking. Timmy and Jimmy noticed when we got back.
"What happened?" Jimmy stood up and walked over to us.
"She's awake" I told him with a smile on my face. He sighed relieved.
"Can we go see her?" He asked Mark.
"Only one of you," he looked around, "here, I'll take you to her room" Jimmy and Mark walked away.
"Can you take me home?" I asked Timmy.
"Sure, you're staying or am I bringing you back?" he grabbed his keys and we walked outside.
"I'm just going to change and get some things"
"Okay" he smiled and we left.****************************
