What Happened When We Met

Tests

It had been a busy day at the hospital. Patients coming in and out of the E. R. I was about to head home when Mark started walking by my side.
"You're going home?" he asked me when he saw that I had changed my clothes.
"Yeah, I am exhausted man! I just want to sleep" I told him sighing loudly.
"Well I guess I can take Alaska as my patient if you want" he shrugged his shoulders.
"She's here?" I asked scared, we had been in the hospital many times.
"Yeah, she said it's just a consult" he assured me.
"Don't worry, I'll do it" I patted his back and went to check up on Alaska.
She was sitting down biting her nails anxiously.
"What's up A?" I sat down by her side.
"I need a favor, and it's going to scare the crap out of you" she told me nervously.
"What is it?" I had no idea what she meant. What could be so bad that would scare the crap out of me?
"I need a pregnancy test"
I didn't know what to tell her. I never imagined the moment when one of my friends was going to tell me that she was probably pregnant. And there I was about to take one of my best friends to get a pregnancy test.
We walked into an exam room. She sat down on a chair and so did I. How do I start? I kept thinking. What should I say? So many thoughts going through my head.
"Okay, I'm going to have to ask you some questions" I told her seriously, pretending to be her doctor and not her friend.
I asked her the usual questions: how long had she been having sexual intercourse, how many days since her first missed period, had she already taking a home pregnancy urine test, etc.
"I took one and it came out positive" she said nervously.
"Okay, I'm going to draw some blood and I'll have them give you your results today" I said getting up and taking everything I needed from the drawer. While I was getting her blood I couldn't help but ask her.
"Weren't you using protection Alaska? What if you are pregnant? What will you do?" I told her. I regretted it later because she seemed more scared than she needed to be.
"I don't- we did use protection but ahhhhh," she covered her eyes with her hands, "this can't be happening!"
I hugged her for a moment and then walked to the lab.
"I need those for today, page me when they're ready" I told the guy in charge and headed out.
Alaska was already sittng outside.
"Did you tell Seattle?" I ask her worried.
"Why would I? What if I'm not?" She said with hope in her eyes.
"Why don't you go home? I'll take the results as soon as they're ready" I suggested. She nodded, gave me a hug and left.
I went back inside the hospital. I was on my way to an on-call room when I saw Atticus.
"Hey you!" He gave me a hug.
"How are you? What are you doing here?" I asked concerned.
"Just here for a follow up, you know, after the accident. This is my last one" he smiled.
"Well that's good!" I nodded smiling.
"Do you want to go somewhere after? Or are you going home?" He asked smiling. He was always like that, he always had a smile on his face.
"I would love to, but I'm waiting for some lab results for a patient"
"Oh! No problem, we'll go some other time" he told me. A nurse came for him, so we hugged goodbye. I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket. It was a text from Jimmy.

Coming home anytime soon?

No, got held up doing some stuff.

Okay, I'll be here.

Obviously I thought while I rolled my eyes. Where else could he be? I laughed to myself while I walked to the on-call room. I decided that I would lay down until they paged me from the lab.
I fell asleep for about an hour when I got the page. I took a moment to wake up completely and then picked up Alaska's labs. I was curious but I wouldn't open them until I was with her, I mean as her doctor I had the right to see them first, but as her friend I had to let her do it.
I got home and saw Tyler and Alice sitting down on the couch watching a movie. I said hi to them and noticed that Tyler had his arm around her. They looked pretty nice together. I had to threaten Tyler to not hurt her, because after the Ronnie thing, she was pretty sad. Good thing Tyler came to the rescue.
I ran to Alaska's room and without knocking I went in. Seattle was in there with her, he looked strangely at me when I came through the door running with the paper in my hand.
"I have to show you this letter" I lied.
She nodded knowingly and followed me to the hallway closing the door behind her . I gave her the paper and she opened it quickly. She stared at it confused.
"What does it mean? I don't know how to read this" she gave me the paper. I checked her hCG levels and sighed relieved.
"Negative" I told her smiling.
"Negative what?" Emma asked coming out of her room.
"Nothing" Alaska took the paper out of my hands quickly.
"You thought you were pregnant?" Emma said her eyes wide open.
"No" Alaska rolled her eyes.
"Where you looking for STDs?" Emma asked laughing, "you don't have to lie to me Alaska, you guys think I don't notice stuff because I'm younger than you, but I figured" Emma wiggled her eyebrows and winked at Alaska, "don't worry, I won't say anything" she smiled and walked back inside her room.
Alaska and I looked at each other and then walked to our own rooms.
I went inside my room. The lights were off but the tv was on. Timmy and Effie were asleep on the floor with a bunch of blankets and pillows, I thought I saw Effie's foot on Timmy's face. Jimmy was asleep on the bed with his back towards me. I took off my shoes and climbed on to the bed slowly trying to not wake him up. I laid close to him and put my arm around him placing my hand on his chest. I could feel his heart beating rhythmically. I smiled and turned around, and I fell asleep.
