Monday at lunch, Margaret and Bethany's groups were both going to eat outside in the area near the football field that was shaded with trees. All of the guys from both groups had already claimed their group's territory. A few of the girls were already there, but the main girls were on their way. Margaret, Lucie, and Izzy walked three feet ahead of Bethany, Cassidy, Jennifer, and Lizzie.
Margaret had hung out with Izzy and Lucie all day Saturday and all Sunday night, with her promise ring on, and they hadn’t noticed. She was getting to the point where she was going to shove her hand in front of their eyes until they saw it. It was kind of annoying. I mean, it wasn’t like it was some teeny-tiny thin piece of metal! It was thick-ish and had diamonds for God's sake! Come on!
Izzy was telling a story and Margaret smiled, running her left hand's fingers through her hair. All of the sudden Lucie's eyebrows furrowed.
"Margaret? What's that ring?" she asked.
Margaret hid her smile and held her hand out in front of her. "What? This? Oh, Matt gave it to me Friday night," she said in a casual way.
Izzy stopped walking, so Margaret and Lucie stopped too. They were about halfway across the football field. "Is that an engagement ring?!" Izzy practically yelled. Bethany and her girls looked up, curious.
"Keep your voice down!" Margaret hissed.
"So it is?!" Lucie shrieked. The other girls were about a two and half feet away.
"Dear God, shut up! No! It isn’t an engagement ring!" she paused and smiled. "It's a promise ring!"
Izzy gasped. "Are you serious?" Margaret nodded.
"Tell us everything!" Lucie demanded. Bethany was about a foot away.
"Okay…. He told me he'd never met anyone who made him this happy. He said he knew we were only seventeen, but he wants to marry me, he wants to have kids with me, and he wants to have a life with me. He said he always wants to be with me, and he can't stand the thought of loosing me. He promised to always love me, and to always be there for me, and that I will always be in his life," Margaret said, smiling really big at remembering it.
Bethany and Cassidy exchanged a look; both of their jaws were dropped. All of the sudden Bethany was very mad. Cassidy found the whole event amusing. Jennifer couldn’t have cared less, and Lizzie was actually happy for Margaret.
"He's going to end up cheating on her. Or he's going to see what a bitch she is and dump for her for someone better. Hopefully he'll realize how ugly she is and dump her soon. You know they won't last long at all," Bethany said loud enough for Margaret to hear.
Margaret looked up at the sky and shook her head, smiling slightly in disbelief.
"That's really mean, Bethany," Lizzie said all of the sudden.
Bethany snorted at her and Cassidy looked at her like she was crazy. "And you've been so nice to her?" Bethany retorted.
"I don’t care. That was a really bitchy thing to say," Lizzie said.
Margaret, Izzy, and Lucie turned around to gape at her.
"Shut your f-g mouth, Lizzie," Bethany said, her eyes narrowed.
"I'm so done with you, Bethany," Lizzie said, shaking her head.
"Are you being serious, Lizzie?" Cassidy asked.
"Yeah. I am," Lizzie said. She began to walk away, Cassidy, Jennifer, and Bethany all staring after her in disbelief.
When Lizzie started to pass Margaret, she reached out and touched her arm. "Thanks," she said, smiling slightly.
