"M-Matt?" Margaret asked in a broken voice.
The scene before her broke her heart. It caused her physical pain.
Bethany had her hands around Matt's neck. Matt had his arms wrapped around her waist. They were kissing. And it wasn’t just a kiss; it was deep, urgent, passionate kisses. They both turned to look at Margaret when she spoke, Bethany with a smug smirk.
"Hey, Margaret," she said.
"W-what're you doing?" Margaret squeaked.
"Isn't it obvious?" Matt asked, rolling his eyes.
"But w-why?" Margaret asked.
"Why not?" Bethany replied.
"You promised!" Margaret exclaimed to Matt.
He snorted, a cruel expression on his face. "Do you honestly think I meant anything I said to you?"
"But you- but you love me. Y-you said you love me!" Margaret said, quietly sobbing at the end.
"I don’t love you. I never did love you. I will never love you," Matt said.
His green eyes were cruel. His pink lips formed a malicious sneer. He had his arms wrapped around Bethany.
"Matt!" Margaret pleaded. "You can't be serious!"
"Oh, I am," he said.
"B-but everything we did together, all of our plans. You said you love me," Margaret whispered, tears forming in her eyes.
"He doesn’t love you," a voice breathed in her ear. "He loves me."
Margaret jerked awake on Friday night.
She looked around and saw that she was in Matt's room, not the gym at school. She saw Matt lying beside her, not Bethany. She felt hot tears welling up in her eyes. She got up out of the bed and went across the hall to the bathroom. Inside, she splashed her face with cold water, removing any tears from her eyes. She met her eyes in the mirror.
What was wrong with her? Why was she crying? It was just a dream. It would never happen. Never. Ever. So why was she dreaming about it? Why was she crying about it?
Because it'd all felt so real. It felt like she was there, Matt was really saying those things to her; he was really doing those things with Bethany. She wasn't insecure. That was one thing Margaret Pierce was not. She was upset and crying because it'd been so real when Matt told her he didn't love her; when he'd said it was all a lie.
But it was ridiculous. He would never say that to her. He would never look at her like that. She was acting ridiculous! It was all Bethany's fault, too, for saying all of that stuff to Margaret Thursday. Her subconscious had stored it away and decided to make a big deal about it when there was no deal to it. Everything seemed to be Bethany's fault.
Oh, and Bethany's demeanor in the dream hadn’t helped the whole not-being-freaked-out thing. She was just plain creepy.
Sighing, Margaret unlocked the door, opened it, and nearly screamed.
There was a figure standing in the doorway.
Bethany! Margaret's head screamed at her, but that wasn’t it.
"Lucie," Margaret breathed, placing a hand over her heart. "You nearly gave me a heart attack."
"Sorry," Lucie said yawning. "What're you doing up?"
