Bethany was in her room, gazing out her window. It was ten-thirty, and the moon was shining bright in the sky. She hadn’t seen Matt on his run with his dog, and she was waiting for him. Her hair was in soft waves, and she was just wearing shorts and a tee shirt.
Bethany always loved the night. She always felt at whole when the moon was in the sky and the stars were shining. It was like the dark ignited her; gave her the most energy. She couldn’t really explain it to anyone. She guessed she was just a night owl.
Earlier that night, her mom had come in, asking to see her bottle of her pills. Bethany knew she wanted to be sure they were gone; that she was actually taking them. Her mother had smiled sadly and thankfully at her, before exiting. She was so stupid. Bethany didn't need the pills, so why would she take them? It was all completely ridiculous.
There was nothing wrong with Bethany. She was better. She wasn’t sick anymore, no matter what that doctor had said. It was probably one of those pill-mills or whatever you call it. Bethany did think it was in a sketchy part of town. But how could her mom and her dad think she needed to be back on the medicine? When she was on it, she just felt not herself. She felt like it muffled all her senses, and she hated it. There wasn’t anything wrong with her! She was better!
She's heard about Lucie and Matt's little party. Well, it wasn’t that little. Bethany, Cassidy, and Molly were pissed that they weren’t invited. Guess who did get to go? Jennifer. She'd told them about how stupid and boring it was. She also told them about how Margaret had gotten trashed. Bethany had found that bit hilarious, and was sad she didn't get to see it. But whatever. She wouldn’t have gone to the party even if she was invited.
Bethany heard footsteps padding on the sidewalk, but they were heavy enough to be Matt's, and they weren’t fast enough for running. Bethany peered out the window, and saw Lucie walking the dog, gazing around happily. She was in Abercrombie yoga pants and a tee shirt. Bethany smirked; this could be fun.
Slipping on her flip-flops, she hurried downstairs and stood in the doorway of her back door, waiting for Lucie. She leaned against the doorframe with her arms crossed. When Lucie reached her house, Bethany smirked again.
"Hey, Lucie," she called quietly.
Lucie jumped and looked around. When she spotted Bethany, her eyes narrowed.
"Bethany," she responded, and continued walking with her dog.
Bethany took walked toward the path, and Lucie threw glances at her.
"Why are you out here walking so late by yourself?" Bethany asked.
"Because Matt never walked the dog. So I have to," Lucie responded in a hard tone.
"Well where's Matt?"
Lucie looked over and smirked. "He snuck away with Margaret."
"How romantic," Bethany sneered sarcastically.
"It is, isn’t it?" Lucie responded, carefree.
"And they aren’t back yet?" Bethany demanded.
"Doubt they will be for a while," Lucie responded.
Bethany was quiet for a moment.
"You really shouldn’t be out here by yourself. Bad things happen in the dark."
Bethany's voice was quiet, but it carried on to Lucie.
It was so grim that it raised goose bumps on her arms and caused her shiver in the eighty-six degree weather.
