"Jack wait for me!" Nora called to Jack who was running ahead of her in the forest.
She ran past the broad tree trunks, her arms hitting the fern fonds on the ground. Her heart was beating frantically, making it harder for her to breath.
"Come on Nora!" Jack yelled, Nora slowed, walking slowly she became further behind him.
She slumped herself against the trunk of a fallen tree, trying to calm down she looked around. The labyrinth of trees had gotten thicker and thicker as they came further into the forest, dimly lit, the tops of the trees were swaying in unison.
"Nora?" she herd Jack shout.
"Jack?" Nora called back, her throat stung "I'm back near the fallen tree." there was silence, as Jack drew closer Nora could faintly make out his footsteps.
"Ouch!" he yelped, "twig..." he appeared, stumbling on one foot toward Nora, the sight of him made her giggle.
"Why did you stop?" Jack asked rubbing his foot.
"I didn't want to go to far away form the house" Nora admitted, there was a big space underneath the tree, it was resting against another and had not given way to the pressure. Nora crawled in, the ground was damp and made her dress dirty, but she didn't care.
"Jack come under here" she said, bending down Jack looked into Nora's newfound place. There were ferns covering the other side creating a green wall.
"This can be our secret place" Nora thought out loud.
"Yeah" Jack agreed "All to ourselves, we can't show anybody else this"
Nora rolled her eyes "That's the whole point...that's why they call it 'secret'"
"Yes! Because it belongs to you...and you only" Jack said, Nora slowly nodded. She reached out and tore off a single fond, picking a up hand full of dirt she reached out her hand to Jack.
"What are you doing Nora?" he laughed.
"Keeping the secret" Nora replied.
"No." Jack said "I've got a better idea!" smiling to himself he reached inside his trousers and drew his pocket knife.
Nora laughed "What are you going to do carve the date into the log?"
Jack grimaced and pointed the knife at her stabbing the air twice, "Don't!" snapped
"No," Jack said "But I might carve the date after, it sounds like a good idea!" he turned the knife on himself.
"After? Whoa... Jack what are you doing?" Nora asked, scared.
"Keeping the secret'" Jack quoted her, holding the pointed end to his hand he cut across his palm, drawing blood, his face screwed up with pain, he held his breath and clenched his teeth together.
When he was finished and the pain was relieved in his hand, he chucked the knife to Nora, landing on her lap she cringed at it.
"Go on your turn" Jack said smiling.
Nora shook her head, she could bare the thought. "Jack no..." she said hastily "I'm not going to cut myself for this" with a weak effort Nora pushed the knife off her lap "Its not worth it, blood makes me sick anyway..."
"Wait dose that mean I cut my hand for no reason?" Jack said angrily.
"Jack you can get sick from it" Nora worried "Just at least think about how dirty that knife is!"
"Good god" Jack cried out "You are so skeptical Nora, do something fun for once if your life" Nora, tried to ignore the fact that she rarely had fun.
