Chapter Seventeen

The voice

“Who did you think I was?”

Nora did listen past the word ‘wife’ she still hadn’t quiet comprehended it. Wife. Married. What? She’s his wife?

“Excuse me?” Nora choked out she picked the book up off the ground and stood up next to the bed “I don’t know who you think this is but, this is my husband” Nora causally lied through her teeth about being married, but it was to happen, now that it only wouldn’t. Ever.

“Pardon me, but if you don’t mind…”

“Nora” she said through her teeth

“Nora… right Nora, nice name, but if you don’t mind I would like to be alone with my husband to say my goodbyes” Nora could see that what Sally was feeling was genuine. She was hurting.

There was another knock at the door, but both women kept there eye on each other. “Excuse me Mrs. Finn” both heads turned to face the nurse. It was Joyce; she had a worried look on her face. “There is a phone call for you” she gestured to Nora, she whipped away a stray tear and walked forward to the door, she stopped “I’ll be there in a minute” she told Joyce, she nodded and walked forward.

Nora watched from the door, Sally walked stiffly around the bed to the chair that Nora had sat in; she stared at the limp body in the bed, she gasped flying her hand to her mouth then collapsed in the chair.

“Oh…James” she cried “Oh, dear. What am I going to do?” Nora noticed that she was holding onto something around her neck, possibly a church necklace. “What am I going to do? What about Lucy and Michael”

They had children? Or just she had children?

Nora dropped her head and walked down the corridor looking into the various room as she went something men had visitors around there beds some men she awake and reading. All unaware of the loss. She walked past on of the last rooms and noticed the man lying in the bed; he was awake reading the news paper, but he looked bad. As bad as Jack, bruised and burnt, kind of like what Nora felt now.

“Riley?” she said, the man looked up. “Oh my… Hello” she said walking into the room.

“Nora? Hi” he put down the paper on his lap, his face cringing with pain. “What are you doing here in a place like this?” he asked, obviously happy to have someone to talk to.

“Well…” Nora wasn’t sure how to tell him the news. He was Jack’s best friend “Jack is here, about four room down, and well… something happened. I …I don’t know what exactly, but they couldn’t save him.”

Riley’s smiled fell “Oh my…”

Nora could feel the tears coming back the sting in her throat “Gosh Riley, I don’t know what to do. It happened to quickly. You have to tell me Riley, what was it like over there. What was it like?”

Nora could sense his reluctance.

“Nora, I don’t know is should tell you, what it was like, but it can say…it changes you, like you wouldn’t believe, at first you don’t realize, but when you think that your about to die, you reflect on it, and you see. You a better person on the inside, sure you now how to kill, and it doesn’t feel good, but you get a better take on life. A renewed perspective. You think about things differently, you respect the life you have and are so much more thankful for it. Out of all of us Jack had changed the most, he would talk about you so often that I couldn’t stand to be near him…he truly loved you more than you could imagine, he didn’t die in vain Nora. What happened to him was unfair and it shouldn’t have happened to a guy like that, but it did, I know that he would have been scared, he’s at peace” Nora wiped away a drifting tear.

“Thank- you Riley” she leaned in a kissed him gently on his bruise cheek. Her lips where cool against his enflamed skin.

“Mrs. Finn, your phone call” Said Joyce’s voice from behind her

“Oh right” Nora said running out of the room, to quickly to thank Riley for a second time.

She turned the corner, Joyce handed her the Phone.

“Hello” she said. There was silence on the and of the phone

“Is this, Nora Katherine Anne Greenhill?” asked a familiar voice, Nora gasped as she realized.

Jack……
