The early morning sun was low and the dull blue sky was lined with orange clouds. Nora slowly rolled out of her bed moaning from sleep deprivation. She slid into her slippers they were cold and rough on her feet, scuffing across her floor she walked to her closet, swinging the door open, it hit the wall with a loud bang.
"Nora is that you? What are you doing up there?" came Ethel's echoing voice from the entrance hall.
"Yes mom... I'm up" Nora's voice was dry, she began to search through her closet trying to find something to wear today.
It was the first day back at school and Nora was both exited and nervous about it. She was meeting him at his house and was going to walk to school with him. He must be just as nervous as her, it was his first day at a new school.
At least he would have one friend.
Nora picked an outfit that she liked it very much, it wasn't a special outfit, but it wasn't and everyday dress either. She pinned her tight curls and was ready to go down stairs.
Why was she going to this much trouble for school? After all it was just school, there was nothing special about it. Or was there? Was the reason Jack?
Of course it was, Jack, Jack, Jack.
She pushed through the doors of the dinning room, Ethel sat on the opposite side of the door with a tea cup in her hand, and a half-eaten piece of toast.
"Morning" she said plainly "Ready for school?"
"Spring break goes too fast" Nora said in a flat voice, walking foreword she slumped in the chair across from her mother.
"Don't you look nice" Ethel said, putting her teacup down on the saucer then folding her hands together on the table top.
Nora shrugged, looking at the food spread across the table she deiced on a piece of toast, it was cold but she didn't care.
"I'll be home at four" she said, standing up from the table with her piece of toast still in her hands she headed from the door.
"Have a nice day" Ethel said jokingly
Nora turned around and replied "I will"
The halls of Columbia high school were crowded with people hurrying around, excited with the beginning of school. The noise of a thousand voices talking at once was just a hum in the back of Nora's mind.
Walking next to Jack, Nora noticed that everybody was staring at her. What gossip this would make, Nora Greenhill with the new boy.
Nora tried to ignore there dictating glares, but couldn't block out their faces. All wearing the same blank expression, with the same curiousness in their eyes.
They walked to the door of their English class a slender girl pushed her way through the door, she ignored Nora and continued to walk to her seat in the second row next her black haired friend.
"Ready?" Nora asked
Jack nodded, took a deep breath then walked into the classroom. Stopping by the teachers desk, "Wait a minute" Mrs. Harlem said blandly, she finished writing the looked up "Hello?" she said, pushing her glasses further up her nose.
"Hello I'm Jack Finn an-"
"Oh yes the new principals son" She said, cutting him off, everybody was excited about the new principal, and his son that would be attending.
Jack walked away without another word to find a seat. Nora sat behind him, to her dismay her seat was next to Benjamin.
"Nora" he said in his usual over confident voice.
