Chapter Ten
Forever
The sun had set, the moon had risen and the stars where out. Nora was looking into her bedroom mirror putting her in ear ring.
Everything was ready for tonight. The string quartet was here and set up. Mary-Ellen had set the table and was putting the finishing touches on the meal, and everyone was reminiscing in the sitting room.
There was a light knock at the door, and Nora looked past her head in the mirror to see Jack leaning against the door frame. He was dressed in the evening suite,
The charcoal gray almost black with a fine thin stripe shone a different shade in the bedrooms light.
She turned around and smiled at him.
“You look beautiful” he sighed. Nora looked down her dress that matched hi tie and pin
“You too” she gestured to Jack. She walked foreword and took his arm. They walked out of the room together down the hall till they made to the top of the stairs.
“Are you ready?” he said, Nora looked at him in the eyes and nodded, she put on her best fake smile she could, he leaned into her and whispered “You can do better than that” he joked but with a hint of real sincerity, Nora laughed then started to walk down the stairs. They rounded the corner to the sitting room. Everybody turned to see the couple together. Ethel was leaning down to Annett admiring her bracelet, but stood up slowly when she noticed Nora. “You look lovely Nora darling” she looked at Nora up and down. Ethel didn't notice Jack until she saw him attached to her arm.
“Oh…” Ethel said “Jack you look nice.” Jack saw her astonishment. She didn't think that they were such a likely pair.
“Thank you Ethel and you to look lovely” he spoke smoothly and calmly.
“I… didn't know that….you …were a ….couple” Ethel was short for words. Was she really that shocked that they would end up together? Or did she just not like it?
“well” She said “dinner is about to be served, so you might want to start moving into the dinning room.” Ethel walked past her towards the doors next to Danielle. Jack leaned into Nora to kiss her on the cheek but she turned her head and kissed him on the lips. Ethel had turned her head and saw, she scowled, then turned and walked through the door.
“Come on” whispered Jack.
“In a minute, I want to wish my dad a happy birthday” she smiled and slipped her arm out of Jack’s. Nora walked foreword to where her father was slowly getting up from his armchair, next to Leroy.
“Dad” She said, she rested her hand on his shoulder. A smile widened on Nora’s face. “Happy Birthday” She wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tightly. Edmund smiled back he kissed her on the head.
“Thank-you darling” she let go of him, and turned her head around Jack was still waiting her smiling. She walked back to him, and continued on towards the dinning room. The walked through open doors and moved along the table until they came to the seat with their names on it. Jack’s was on the other side of the table at the opposite end next to Samuel Hobart and Nora was place next Audrey his wife. Clearly someone had changed them. Nora had her suspicions about her mother who would have been one of the first to come into the room. but Nora casual leaned down the table and said. “Excuse me Mr. Hobart, but did you want to switch seats so that you can sit next to you wife? ” Nora smiled. Samuel beamed “Why thank-you dear that would be lovely. ” they exchanged place settings , and Nora slipped into her chair next to Jack.
“It feels good to be sitting in a chair that you know you belong in” Nora joked and laughed.
“Gee! I wonder who did that” Jack was getting in on the joke and Nora laughed with him. The was a small clinking sound- someone tapping a glass with a knife- it was Ethel. Once everybody had stopped talking and drew their attention to where the sound was coming from she stood up, she cleared her throat once then started to talk.
