Chapter Thirteen
Change
Nora felt Jack’s absence the most during the rest of the day. He didn’t return in time for dinner, Nora could feel hers mothers eyes on her while she ate in silence. After dinner Nora stood up the table to leave and Ethel, embarrassed her further with making her formally apologise to everybody for her ruthless behaviour earlier today. She walked off to bed fuming with rage, over her mothers cruel actions.
She closed her door louder then necessary, and ran to her bed, she hid her head in her pillows and prayed for the tinniest morsel of solace. She fell asleep still dressed, curled up on the seat of the bay-window, watching the stars come out.
She stood alone on cliff overlooking pristine blue water. It was much to humid for late July. Then an expected chill pass though the wind. Nora shivered and wiped her white dress over and over again with her hands. Until she realized that she was wiping thick, dark substance onto her dress. She looked at it and cringed with distaste.
Blood.
Where did it come from? She slowly lifted her hands. They were drenched in blood. Nora’s stomach churned, she gets sick at the sight of blood. She tried to wipe it all off. But as she did more and more blood appeared on her hands. It wasn’t her blood, there was no laceration. Where was it coming from?
There was a bright organ flicker out of the corner of her eye becoming bigger and bigger. She turned to see what it was.
Fire.
To the right of the cliff, there was a dock. Sprawling fires, rapidly becoming bigger, churning black smoke filtered to the sky. The fires were set on boats and on the land. The boats slowly sunk, being pulled into the ocean. And people ran around in panic. The blue water was disturbed with more blood streaming through, as the water became littered with bodies.
What had happened here? What was this place? What had caused such bloodshed?
Just then a deafening blunder filled the air, as two small, fast planes speed overhead, as they approached the terrible scene of despair. The circled twice, then an ear splitting sound came from the dock. One plane started to get smoke coming out the back, it fell from the sky like a dead bird and plundered into the water. The other plane flew away.
Nora was scared as she watched the massacre of innocent people. She could see clearly the worried faces as they tried and failed to defend themselves. Below, she could smell the saltwater, mixed with blood; even the raw stench of death was thick in the air as it swirled around from all parts of the dock. She could here their frantic screams of fear, she tried to scream back but no sound came from her mouth.
There was no way that she could help them.
She woke to the sound of creaking floorboards a dull light flashed past the door.
“Jack?” she said, but there was no sound, the light vanished. Nora sat up and realised that she was still on the seat by the bay-window, she slowly stood up, her knees ached from being bent for so long. The thin crescent moon was high is the sky visible from her window. What time was it? She quickly crossed the floor of her room and peered out of her door, Jack’s door was half-closed, she could make out a dark silhouette moving around the room. She crossed the hallway to his door, she opened it slowly.
“Jack” she whispered. He jumped slightly with shock.
“Sorry” Nora said quietly
“It’s fine honey, it’s me” he was nothing more than a voice floating in the air. Nora searching through the dark but could only make out his shape with the limited light. “Sorry I got home so late”
