Chapter Fifteen
Reminder
His face was so serene, so peaceful she had never seen anything like it before. Never once where is so soft under the touch of her finger.
Jack.
To her he would always be perfect.
At peace.
Is that what they call it? His face looked peaceful, but Nora saw beyond the expression, he was hurting. More then ever, not be standing be side her. Instead Nora was looking down upon Jack lifeless body, helpless lost against it will to fight to hang on but eventually defeated. No tears were to be shed; she couldn’t find it in her heart to do something so productive when all she wanted to do was to look at his face until she became old, and finally die next to him. But it wouldn’t come quick enough to sooth the sting in her heart. Her throat was dry, it stung.
He was gone
There was nothing that she could do; there was no way to turn back time.
It was done. He was never coming back to her.
She slowly stroked the side of his face from forehead to chin. The temperature threw her off and made her stomach churn.
A black threatening fog swept over Nora and concealed her sight of Jack. After it had passed Nora she dropped her hands away from her eyes, but Jack wasn’t there anymore. The fog had taken him with it, and now he was gone
“Jack” Nora said, she starting to run after him, in the direction the fog has gone, but there was nothing to be acquired. She kept running and eventually ran into the fog. She couldn’t see far in front of herself.
She found him.
Standing before her where the fog depleted, in a pool of light.
Breathing. Living. Loving.
More beautiful than she had every seen him. The light radiated off his skin offsetting the colour, making it milkier. He held his hand out to her, and smiled crookedly. Nora reached out for his hand, she went to take a step forward but she wasn’t able too. She was stuck.
On the border between the fog and the light. She was in the dark. She relied on Jack taking her into the light like he always had. But now, he couldn’t. She couldn’t.
She held out her hand to him. Pushing if forward as far as she could, closer to him. After a while Jack slowly dropped his hand.
“Jack!” she said “I’m here! Come on, take my hand” Jack looked at her and hand sighed. “Well?” she asked stating to get anxious “Come on, take my hand”
His face was sorry and apologetic; he slowly turned around and walked away. The light followed him and left Nora behind
“Jack?” Nora said struggle through the dark to catch up to the light “No, Jack! Come back, you have to take me with you” she stopping running and watched as the light disappeared taking Jack with it.
Nora suddenly woke to another swarm of light. Morning. She rolled over to look at Emily, she was still sleeping in her bed.
Immediately Nora could feel an annoying routine forming. Morning. School she sat in the back row listening and answering questions when asked. She retired to her room, did her homework and went to bed. Ate, drank and slept, like every other student, with the exception of Emily’s newly forming schedule
She soon after, became attached to Richard. He would surprise her with expensive gifts, take her out to romantics dinners, in Manhattan. They spent nearly all of their time together- when Emily wasn’t in class. Nora wasn’t at all surprised when Richard asked her to marry him after only two months.
They wanted to jump straight into their new life together and got married in November. Nora was surprised when she was asked herself to be a bridesmaid, she accepted and helped out any way she could on the big day. She mostly just held the flowers while Emily’s best friend from Seattle, calmed her and tried to reassure her about the marriage. But once Emily enter the church and saw Richard waiting at the end of the isle, all of her time that she had spent worry quickly evaporated.
While Nora watched them-say their vows to one another, ‘I do’, then kiss each other fiercely once they were announced husband and wife- she couldn’t help but think if she would ever get her chance. Have a beautiful wedding in a beautiful church with beautiful flowers. But would she get the chance to walk down the isle towards the most beautiful groom.
What was it like to Jack living without her? Was he coping?
What would she know… she could only ever image what it would be like in the army?
He frequently wrote her letters telling her of his experiences, even thought his letter all had a return address she couldn’t find it in her heart to write back.
My love, he wrote;
I miss you, and with each new day that comes is only day further away since I last held you in my arms and told that I loved you. My heart yearns for you constantly and sometimes is hard to concentrate. We had finished basic training, I have been taught to kill a man but I never want to have to use my skills. I may face death at some possible time, though I don’t fear him, I know that he will be no ally to me. We are now in out new army base; it’s in Hawaii, a place called Pearl Harbour. A darling place, but one I never want you to see. I have met some knew men, one of them grew up in France and moved here with his father. He tells me of green pasters stretching out as far as the eye can see, it sounds beautiful. When this is behind us we’ll go to France and live there.
The stars here may be the same- as I am under the same hemisphere- but they don’t blanket me with love and warmth like they do at home.
When I return, I hope you can forgive me, and I hope that you can understand why I did this. I didn’t mean to prove anything to you, if that to what you feel then you need to understand the love I feel for you.
This may sound ill-mannered of me, but if your heart no longer allies with mine. I will completely understand. I wish you the best of lives and kind regards. But I should let you now that I will never stop loving you.
You will be a constant in my mind, and will I think about before I go to sleep and you’ll be the first thing I ponder when I wake up.
I will always love you
Jack .
She thought about the last sentence in the letter, I will always love you; Nora couldn’t help but think if she had made the right choice to not writ back to him.
She folded the piece of paper up and slid it underneath her pillow she looked across the room at her desk, and felt the emptiness of the room.
Emily was gone.
She still attended school here, but she has moved in with Richard. The janitors had come the next to take her bed out of the room give Nora more space.
She stared at her desk that has once been the place where Emily’s bed had stood. She closed her eye and let her dreams take her. Awaiting tomorrow.
