Chapter Six Deliberation
AS THE MONTHS WENT BY Jack still was not been able to show his indescribable affection towards Nora. It welled inside of him every day that he saw her show up on his door step in the mornings to walk to school with him. Sitting next to her in everyone of his classes. He wished that he could grab her and kiss and hope that she would kiss him back with the same amount of love that he love her with. He wished that he could tell her how much he loved her, but he was too afraid of what she might say if he did. Would she say yes because she felt the same and was waiting for this moment her whole life? Or would she say no because she didn't think about him that way, and that she would think it would be best if they stayed friends because that would be to weird for her? Jack wasn't sure about either one of those and certainly didn't want think about it too much. He was sure that if he thought about it too much that it would damage his ego to the point of un-reparable. He would have to start think a little bit less about Nora and more about his school work. He was an honour student with the same test scores as Nora -only because he made sure that they studied for their every test together-. The future in front of him was glowing very brightly but he couldn't see that at all. All he could see in his future was Nora. It was now June and school was almost finished for the year- For the other students it meant that summer was coming and they wouldn't not have to return for a little while. But that mean for Nora and Jack they would have to leave high school. They were now Eighteen- soon to turn nineteen. Graduation was in four weeks, and when the time came they would put on their black robes, with the deep marron stashes- yellow for Jack, as he was the valedictorian of their class- Together with their peers, friends and family members watching them they would stand up on the podium and receive their scrolls telling them that they have graduated from high school. They would have to go to college, partly because they wanted to but mostly because their parents wanted them too. At least... that was the case for Nora. Her mother was excited that she was going to Sarah Lawrence College in New York. Together they had been talking about going there since Nora was nine and the school was first established in nineteen-twenty-six. Her mother would constantly bring up at the dinner table facts about the schools extra-curricular and curricular activities. Ethel would continuously brag about how her daughter would be attending the best girl's school in the country. Jack was offered a three year scholar ship to Dartmouth in New Hampshire. Which he casually declined- And accepted his offer to the University of South Carolina.-After he found out he could only think about the sacrifice that his step father Ted would have to make trying to find a new job and a new house. They were happy in Columbia, his step-father was happy at work. He loved his job, it was a good job- the principal of Columbia high school. Had had always wanted to work there. And he didn't want to tear his mother away from her best friend in the whole world, Ethel. Jack didn't want to be the reason why his family was unhappy. But the biggest reason of all would have to be that he didn't want to be away from Nora. Which was stupid of its own, because she would be in New York. Her and her mother. So then Martha wouldn't have Ethel anyway maybe if he applied to NYU. Would they take late acceptances. But then he and his family would have to move New York. His dad may not be able to find a job or a home. But then his mother would have Ethel. Jack felt in the middle and in control of his parent's happiness and financial problems. No matter what he choose, there would always be something that made the situation bad. Jack was surprised that on the day of his eighteenth birthday a few weeks ago, instead of getting a letter and fifty dollars from his biological father. He got a visit... his father had come down to Columbia and stayed with Jack during the week of his birthday. Jack had finally gotten to know the father that he never got to know, in the short time the he was in his life. He learnt everything that he wanted to know, and know he promised to write his return address on his letters. Also promising to send more during the year, as well as telling him to come a visit him and meet his wife and half brother in New York. He didn't stay for any longer than the week. He left the morning after his birthday, but assured him that he would visit soon. The only thing that Jack wasn't quite sure of was if his dad would stick to his word... but he had a strong feeling.
