When they'd left the class room I felt like everyone was staring at me, like my chest was closing, like the walls were closing. Though Mr. Turner continued with his lecture, I couldn't make out any of the words that he was saying. I was scared. Scared that I'd somehow claimed the life of a girl who was once my best friend, even if she had said all of those things about me to Katie, she didn't deserve what I said to her, because I'd done worse. Ripping off her shirt, tripping her, all things physically worse than what she'd said. Or Katie claimed that she'd said.
By third period I was pretty sure that everyone knew about her suicide attempt now, but no one put in any effort to sympathize because the sad truth was, because of Katie no one cared if Delilah lived or died, because in their eyes she was trash now, her reputation tainted. Questions started to arise from my mind, questions that should have been asked before I even approached Delilah and now questions that I'm going to take to Katie.
As soonafterschl rang I snatched my backpack out of the seat and turned in my math work, Katie wasn't having lunch with me today so I'd had to hurry and catch her before she left, but as soon as I stepped out of class I walked into Steven Casca.
" Hey." He greeted me nervously.
"Uh, hey Steven. Would you mind moving I have to get somewhere." I said trying to walk around him.
"Can I just ask you something, before you go?" He asked looking at his hands.
"Sure, make it quick." I urged.
"Um. Alright. Uh, is it true- you know- that Delilah attempted to commit suicide?" He asked not making an ounce of eye contact.
"Yeah. She's in the hospital now, she wouldn't be if it weren't for me, but I'm trying to get it straightened out." I said.
As soon as I stepped away I heard Steven mumble:
" This has more to do with me than you."
I whipped around and slowly made my way back towards Steven who was now fixing his glasses on the bridge of his nose.
"What'd you say?" I asked
Steven looked up at me as if he were surprised that I heard what he said. He started backing away as I walk back to him until he hit a locker.
"Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean for this to go as far as it did but Katie told me that if I did her that favor she'd have her father write me a letter of recommendation to Virginia Tech and-"
"Wait you said Katie? What favor did you do for her?" I asked
Steven looked around noticing that there were a few students in the hallway, he motioned for me to follow him and lead me into the Technology Lab, he locked the door and threw his book bag on the table clearing his throat before he began.
"She made me forge pictures of Delilah and fabricate all those text messages between you , her, and Alex to make it seem like she was trying to sleep with the both of you, she even had me hack into her old Facebook account and steal some old pictures of her and you when you guys were in middle school. And she read messages between you guys too, she knows everything and she manipulated you guys, with my help. I feel like an awful person Tommy and I'm sorry.
I know how much Delilah means to you and I almost took her away from you all because I wanted to get into a good college, it was selfish of me and I wasn't even thinking of the consequences. I wasn't thinking about how this would affect Delilah, I even read in her messages to one of her friends that she had depression, but I didn't take that into consideration. I am truly sorry about this, its my fault for even agreeing to do the work for Katie." He finished.
