It was September 13th when I got the call.
"Alexis Ferguson?" I was confused and worried. "Yes." The man on the other end took a long deep breath, like he was going to tell me some terrible news. "I'm so sorry. I don't want to be the one to tell you this, but, your fiance, Joshua Jackson was very badly wounded in his chest during the war. He is expected to live no more than 5 days. He is at the Veteran's Hospital in Washington D.C. Apparently, you live 25 minutes from here? Yes, if you'd like to come and see Josh then you may come."
Tears fled my face. I knew something would happen. My biggest fear was coming true. He was my sun on a cloudy day. I hoped I wouldn't lose him. I couldn't lose him.
"Thank you for letting me know. I'll be down in a half an hour."
I hung up the phone and dialed his mother. I didn't know how I was going to tell her. She picked up on the first ring.
"Hello Glenda, its me, Alexis. As you know, Josh went off to the military. He was extremely wounded during his 3 month trial. He is expected 5 days to live. He is at the Veteran's Hospital in D.C. I'm on my way if you'd like me to pick you up."
She heard how upset I was and knew I was crying.
"Oh, honey. I'll meet you there. It'll be okay, Alexis. Josh is a fighter. He'll fight this."
That's when we both started crying. We both knew how brave and how much of a fighter Josh was.
"I'll see you there."
"Okay, sweetie."
I grabbed my purse and keys and went to the car port I knew he would fight this. This would be the final 5 days. And I wasn't leaving his side.
