Puzzle Pieces of the Past

~Jared's POV~ 

Audrey runs to the closet. She opens the door and finds what she's looking for. She lays the box on the tile floor and sits down. I sit down too. The box is silver and pink. It's a cute box and it's definitely meant to contain baby stuff. This whole thing about Ashley having a baby seems a bit far fetched. The box may be real but I won't believe anything until I see it. Audrey lifts the lid. 

"Look. Here's the baby shower invitation I was talking about." She says handing it to me. Come join us as we celebrate Laney and Ashley's baby girl! Well it does say his name...

"Anything else?" I ask. She shifts stuff around and finds something. It's a purple plush bear. 

"And here! There's pictures of her and Ash! She's so pretty!" 

There was a few pictures of them. The girl named Laney was slender and short but had long wavy brown hair. She had on a silver necklace and was wrapped in Ash's arms. Ash had one of his hands on her stomach. But her face. That face looks kind of familiar to me. 

"They look really happy together. I wonder what happened? Has Ashley ever talked about this woman?"

"No of course not. I'm more concerned about the baby. What happened to her? How old are these pictures?"

"Turn it around Audrey. Sometimes pictures are stamped with dates." She turns it around. It's dated May 16, 2001. 

"Wow 2001? Ash looks so strange! I've never seen pictures of him that young." I say. 

I rummage through the box and there's still more stuff. There's a list of baby names but the handwriting is really blurry. It looks like there are water stains and they messed up what was written. There's a picture of two people but I have no idea who they are. They look like an older couple. Maybe in their 40's or 50's. 

"What do you think could've happened? This baby has to be alive. Laney must be around here still. This is just all to weird. Maybe they had a fight and she left with her baby?" She asks. 

"Or maybe they...died? Maybe Ash didn't want the baby?" 

At that moment the front door opens and Audrey looks at me in horror and I the same. Since we had everything laid out on the floor in front of us we hurried to pack it all back in the box. Audrey opens the door and I throw the box up to the top. Footsteps along with a voice calling Audrey's name. Oh shit what if we're caught? 

"I think we're okay don't worry." Audrey says quietly.

"Worry about what?" Says Jinxx walking into the kitchen. 

"Uhhh....nothing!" Says Audrey. Wow that didn't sound suspicious at all. 

Jinxx comes over to hug her and me which makes me smile so big. Maybe he didn't notice we were doing anything. Hopefully he didn't see anything. 

"How you been Jar-"

And then, just as I fucking thought we were in the clear, a muffled but loud enough thud comes from the closet door. Shit. Maybe he won't think it wasn't anything important? Jinxx don't go to the door. God I sound like a guy telling the stupid girl not to go in the exact spot where the killer is lurking. 

"What was that?" He asks. 

"Nothing! I was cleaning earlier and I just put everything up." Audrey says.

"Well you got to be careful Audrey. There could be spilled chemicals bottles..." He says walking up to the door. I look at Audrey. I know it's the box. She knows it's the box. We're neither good at making up lies. My hearts beating fast. I don't know what's going to happen. 

"Oh my god!" Jinxx says. He opened the door and there was the box. The lid toppled over and some of the invitations are right in front of him. He bends down slowly and picks up the plush bear. "After all this time...He kept this stuff..." He says quietly. 

Jinxx then puts everything back into the box quickly and comes out of the closet. 

"How did you find this stuff Audrey? And why would you go through his things without asking him first?" He says sternly. 

~Audrey's POV~

"I--I um I found it. And um well I.... Don't be mad Jinxx I was only curious! I'm sorry!" 

"Don't apologize to me Audrey. Apologize to Ashley! You had no business going through that! That is very personal stuff!"

"Look I know it seems bad. I feel bad now and I'm sorry. She was only curious as to what she found and she couldn't help but look through it." Jared says. 

"I get that Jared. But neither of you had business looking through all of that stuff in that box!" 

"I just came across it one day when I was putting stuff back in there Jinxx. I didn't mean to find it. It was just hidden in all that junk in the closet. My eye caught it and I couldn't stop myself from looking through it." I say. 

"It's hidden for a reason! It's kept somewhere where Ash hardly goes to for a reason!" 

"What's that supposed to mean?" Says Jared. 

"Nothing. It means nothing." He says walking towards the front of the house.

"Jinxx you're lying! Come on tell us! Tell me! What happened to that baby!" I say. 

Jinxx's yes grow wide. They look worried and unfocused. He stares at us for a few seconds. Walks towards the door in a quick stride. Says a goodbye which sounded like a sorry at the same time and closes the door. I've never seen Jinxx like that. He's always been the calm one, the one who'd never be angry. Like a steady streaming waterfall. 

~Jinxx's POV~

I had to get out of there. I can't believe they found that box. And I thought Ash got rid of that a long time ago! Guess not. He was such a drunk mess when he let Audrey go and he couldn't bare the pain of losing Laney. But I knew deep inside she's still here with him. 

I told him to be careful to not let the secret out too early. Now them too are being little Nancy Drew or some shit trying to figure out where the baby is. God I hope they don't put two and two together. Everything and I mean everything was in that box! I remember when Laney, Ash, and the rest of us sat around the living room coming up with names for the baby. I remember they were so much in love... I've got to call Ashley.

"Hello?" He says.

"You will not believe this Ash!" 

"What? What happened? Are they okay?" 

"They're fine! But that box in that closet? Yea they found it." 

"Oh shit. Oh shit oh shit oh SHIT! They didn't open it did they oh my god!" 

"Yes they did. They saw all those invitations and pictures and even that little purple bear! Why didn't you move it somewhere else when we got Audrey? Now you have to tell her who she really is!" 

"No Jinxx! I can't do that yet! And I completely forgot where I put it. I've been looking for it for a long time and I've never had the chance to really look because I've been really fucking busy." 

"Ashley. Audrey wants to know what happened to the baby and the mother. She deserves to know sometime! How long are you going to keep it from her? Ashley come on!"

"This is happening way too fast. I expected to have more time. More time for her to adjust. Jinxx I can't. I can't tell her. Not now. I'm not ready to talk about what I did!"

"Then think of something to tell her. You can't just not answer her when she asks you about the baby. Think fast because you're coming back home later on. She'll be waiting."
