I woke up groggily from the long nap. I stretched, noticing it was already dark outside. I stood up, making my way to the kitchen. Taking out some cereal, I dug my hand into the box, too lazy to pour it into a bowl. I see my phone light up on the counter, so I straighten my back, lifting it off it's lean against the fridge. On the way over my eye caught the clock, it was 10:30. I step over and see it was a text from Phil. Dan had just broken up with me a few days ago, and I'd lost touch with Phil since then. Why would he be texting me? I unlock my phone to see five texts from him. They all said things like "Call me", "It's important.", etc. I cocked my eyebrow, confused at why he wanted to talk to me. I hesitatedly tapped Phil's contact, unsure of what to expect.
He picked up after only half a ring. "Mel?" I heard his voice, which was frantic. "Yeah, hi." I said, closing up the cereal as I heard him talk. He paused for a moment. "I-I'm really worried about Dan. He's really upset, Melony. He's been yelling an-and throwing things. He keeps beating himself up. He feels really guilty, I think...about what he did to you, the way he acted." My heart skipped a beat, "R-really?" I asked, scared. I'd never seen Dan angry before. "Do you think I should...?" I said, letting Phil finish it. "Yes. He needs you..." I nodded my head, even though he couldn't see me. "I'm on the way." I choked out, trying to compose myself. I hung up the phone and ran around the apartment, sliding on boots and finding my keys, slinging a jacket over my shoulder on the way out. I rushed out of the lobby and found my car. I started driving down the road, my thoughts running wild.
What was he going to say when he saw me? Why is he so angry in the first place? He was the one who broke up with me! These questions along with more raced through my mind, but my thoughts were interrupted when I arrived. I took the elevator up to their floor and rushed down the hall, pausing for a moment before I raised my arm and knocked, trying to be quiet since it was late.
The door flew open to a messy-haired Phil. "Thank god you're here!" He spoke lowly, so Dan wouldn't hear him. I shut the door behind me and looked down, feeling guilty that I had made Dan mad. It was because of me after all. Phil pulled me into a short hug, then led me towards Dan's room. I heard a thump, then some mumbling. I got scared a bit, not knowing what he was like when he was angry.
Phil knocked on his door. "Dan?" He called his name. "Not now Phil." His voice was low and scratchy. "Dan it's important." Phil said, trying again. "I don't care." Came the reply. Phil looked over at me, out of ideas. I sighed, and placed my shaky hand on the doorknob, Phil gave me an 'are-you-insane-' look. I shut my eyes, set on my decision. My hand turned and the door opened.
Dan was sat by his pillow with his legs hanging off the side of the bed. His hands ran through his hair, and you could tell his body was shaking. It scared me to think it was my fault. "Dan?" My voice croaked out, just above a whisper. I felt Phil's presence dissapear, leaving us alone.
Dan spun around and he stood up. I stood there awkwardly with my hands folded behind my back. "Melony?" His voice softened and he took a step towards me. "Um, l-look I'm sorry Dan I-" I began, but was interrupted. "It's not your fault." He let out a breathe of air he was holding in. "I was a total asshole. I was so stupid!! How could I just throw away what we had? We had everything!" he exclaimed, then paused for a second. "I loved it so much, Melony. You made me so happy, I don't know what I was thinking. I know you probably hate me now, but I just...I need to tell you that..." He looked up into my eyes, his brown ones meeting my green ones. "That I love you. So much."
My heart raced. We'd never said I love you. I had always wanted to, but never built up the courage. I was sure I loved him back. He shook his head and turned around, "Just forget it..." He trailed off. I walked towards him and took his arm, which was tense. I spun him around. "Dan, I love you too." I said, liking the way the words rolled off my tongue.
I had never seen a more genuine smile from one person. Dan looked into my eyes once again, "Take me back?" He said with a cheeky grin. I smiled as well and nodded. His arms wrapped around my small body, I had forgotten how much I missed the feeling. He pulled away.
"Look, I'm really sorry. I just wasn't myself. I don't know what had gotten into me." His voice said in a whisper. "I'm sorry too. I didn't mean for you to get this way." I replied. He took my hand and leaned in, his tall frame over me as our lips connected. I smiled, I'd missed this too. And everything else. I'm so happy we're back to where we left off.
