"You're pregnant?" My mum says astonished. My head starts to reel. What if she doesn't like it. What if she reacts badly. What if...
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Oh god. She doesn't sound happy.

Melissa (Emma's Mums POV)

My baby girl is pregnant! This Joe boy seems to be for real. Wait Joe is the father?! No my baby wouldn't do that. She's clever and knows the consequences of one night stands.I guess... If they are in love... Ok put on your best happy face.
I see Joe wrap his arm around Emma's waist. The emotion between them bubbling. Emma stares into Joe's eyes. Silence but not awkward.

Emma's POV
Joe's blue eyes stare down on me and I stare back. I then look back to my mother who has been silent and usually that's not a good sign.
'So.... I guess you're planning on keeping it?' My mum asks me and Joe.
I look at Joe and then back at my mum and nod.
'Yes.'
'And how far are you into the pregnancy?'
'I think nearly 4 weeks? I'm not too sure..' I trail off.
'Have you had your first ultrasound?'
'Not yet.'
'And do you - as if yet - know the gender?'
'Not yet.' I reply sighing. My mother has always been the quizzical, it's how she found out about my dads 'relationship' with this new girl - Kaira. She was one of those girls who went from man to man worse than Ebola went from Africa to America.
'And... Is Joe the father?'
'Mum! Of course!' I say, embarrassed and I can feel Joe's body shaking with laughter. I look up at him annoyed and he stops. I smile to myself and look at Jamie who - throughout the whole conversation - has been completely silent.
He looks depressed and gets up and leaves.
Why is everyone acting so oddly?
I hear mum sigh.
'Well I guess I'm ok with it... Gosh I'm going to be a grandma at 40! That's something I can tell silly Cassandra at work.' She says devilishly. I look confused and she mouths: 'long story.'
I nod and look at Joe.
'Do you think we should go for an ultrasound now?' I ask him.
Joe shrugs.
'I'm happy if you are.' Joe recites the same thing he said before.
I laugh. 'I get it. Ok let's go.. Mum can we borrow your car?'
'Of course darling.'
I thank her and get to the car.
