Ch.3: Artificial Life

A popular and controversial topic in the world was a zombie invasion. It was one of the few implicated things that had not happened in the world in nearly 2100 years of its dated calendar. There had never been an outbreak of zombies. This was Usagi Kousaka’s point-of-interest for the afternoon as he stood in front of Arashi, Saki and Akida in Daiki Academy’s courtyard.

“Of course you guys know about it, right?” Usagi said with his cocky personality, “About 45 years ago, there were reports of zombies in North Africa! “

“I sincerely apologize, my friend, but I’m afraid that just isn’t possible,” Akida said with a smile. “Or do you have some form of logic to prove me wrong?”

“Are you kidding me, Akida?!” Usagi asked, “Science even proved it! There was this parasite that’s found in the stomach of cats, see?”

Usagi was a unique individual. His first name translated to ‘bunny’. That was the least of his issues, however. His natural hair color was, somehow, pink. Because of this unfortunate fact, he dyed his hair white every other Wednesday. If you happened to see him before the second and fourth Wednesday of a month, you could see his natural hair color at its finest.

Next would have to be Usagi’s unique taste in clothing. He always wore red for some reason. Saki would occasionally joke about an old game called Traffic Light, in which you would call a particular color—red, blue or yellow—to signal what your relationship status was. Red would say that you were in a relationship; yellow said you were talking to someone, and blue said you were single. Noting that Usagi was currently single and probably would be for a very long time, his unusual clothing probably had nothing to do with that. In American cultures, red symbolized affiliation with a gang, but Usagi wasn’t the type for that.

Usagi’s final eccentricity was his insane theories. Every time Arashi and his friends spoke to him, he had something new to discuss. Today’s topic was zombies, but in the past he had theorized about vampires, aliens, killer apes, and a colony of penguins threatening to rule the world… Granted that the last one had no proof to back it up what-so-ever, Usagi would still state such stories as factual, if not simply for entertaining his friends, or himself.

It should have been noted that Saki never paid attention to anything that was said while she was at school. Sometimes she was only there for decoration, sitting down on a bench, smiling with her legs crossed and her hands held by her ankles while she listened to her music through her butterfly-like headphones.  If it weren’t for Arashi, she wouldn’t stick around Usagi and Akida. Arashi laughed a bit as Akida and Usagi quarreled about their beliefs.

“OBJECTION, YOUR HONOR!” Usagi suddenly shouted, “Prosecutor Nomura’s statement contradicts THIS evidence!” He held out his arm to the left of him, presenting the air around him. Akida shook his head with a smile on his face and shrugged. His father, Yukki, was a prosecutor who took on dangerous murder and heist trials involving a group called the Dark Riots Brigade. Likewise, he knew quite a bit about the law.

“Just what obscure video game reference are you making this time, Usagi?” Arashi asked, looking over at his friend.

“I told you, Arashi!” Usagi yelled, “My name’s Kousaka!” Because of his mock-able first name, he preferred for people to call him by his surname. At this point, Akida would tease Usagi about his name and flee from Usagi’s wrath. Some things never change, Arashi said to himself.

“Actually, Akida,” Arashi said to his friend as the two of them left school that evening, “There was something I wanted to ask you about Dante’s appearance last night.” Akida adjusted his scarf so that it parted to his sides.
