I put my dishes in the sink and kissed my mum on the cheek. "I'm off to bed now, Mum."
She looked surprised. "This early? You're the night owl! You almost NEVER go to bed this early," she said.
I looked at the wall clock. It was a polka-dotted fish. Odd, but my mum loved it. "It's nine. That's not early," I replied.
"It is, for you. It's not natural, if you go to bed now," she said as she stuck her tongue out at me, cheekily. That's my mum for you. She's more like a friend than a mum to me...
I just shook my head at her. "I'm just tired," I mumbled.
"Oh, stop it with the mumbling, Annaleise. You know how I feel about the mumbling," she said, wagging her finger at me.
"I'm tired," I said, in a louder voice. I quickly ran up the stairs before she could say anything else.
But I wasn't really tired. No. I lied to her.
I just wanted to escape.
To escape from reality.
And into the seductive world of dreams...
