Mary's Pride

Prolouge

Sam Temple was walking up the beach . Astrid had poofed on the day of Little Pete's sixth birthday, so Sam had asked Mary if she would take care of the Pete. Of course she said "yeah."  This was the FAYZ . Ever since Caine had hired Mary to be in charge of the day care , Sam had a soft spot for her . Even though Sam and Astrid had been together , Sam had always admired Mary from afar . Sam liked the way Mary took care of the kids only 15 years old . Sam and Mary had somehow survived the poof and now were the eldest of the kids living in Perdido Beach. Sam was oblivious to the fact that Mother Mary and Pete was behind him until Mary coughed . Sam turned around .
"Oh hey Mary . Little Pete ." Sam said as he stood up to give Mary a hug .

"Hey Sam." Mary whispered in his ear and smiled ." I'm sorry about Astrid Sam . Little Pete wants to know where his sister has gone and all I can say is that she has gone ... Gone to find mom and dad ."

"Hey it's no biggie ." Sam said as he comforted Mary as she began to cry .

"Little Pete ." Mary croaked through the tears ." Why don't you go and build a sand castle . Stay close though. " Little Pete looked up from his game and nodded . Mary gave him a bucket and spade . Sam follows Mary and Little Pete to a spot where they could see the power plant to the west and the cliff top to the east .

As Mary pulled out a rug from her backpack, Taylor bounced in ."Hey Sam ... Mary." Taylor said . Sam can I speak to you for a minute ?"
Sam looked over his shoulder to where Mary was and she nodded . Sam followed Taylor .

"Taylor what do you want ? " Sam asked .

"What do you mean ?" Taylor looked confused .

" You know exactly what I mean ." Sam retorted his voice rising . "Taylor it's over ok?"

"But Astrid's gone . It can just be me and you Sam . "

"Look Taylor you're a nice girl but ..." Sam cocked his head over to where Mary was sitting watching Little Pete play.
"Oh." Taylor sighed .
"Yeah." Sam said as he waved at Mary when she looked over .
"We can still be friends though right ?" Taylor asked Sam .
"Of course we can . See you around ." Sam nudged Taylor playfully then in a blink of an eye she disappeared.

Sam made his way over to Mary . When he finally sat down , Mary moved closer to Sam so she could still see Little Pete.
"Sam." Mary said after Little Pete came back and fell asleep on the rug .
"What?" Sam replied .
"I'm scared. Scared of what's gonna happen between us . " Mary said and Sam knew it was a serious question.

"How do you mean ?" Sam asked .
" Well, what if Caine and Diana or Drake comes and hunts us . Drake must know that Astrid is gone so it won't take them long to figure out that I'm looking after Little Pete ."

"Mary . Look." Sam replied as he took her hands in his ." Nothing is ever going to get in the way of me and you . When Astrid and I were dating it didn't feel right ." Sam spoke softly . "When Caine took over and made you in charge of running the day care I knew he'd made the right choice."

"Sam . I'm confused . "Mary confessed.
"Ever since that day .... I loved you and I still do . You're great with Little Pete and the kids ." Sam explained slightly blushing .

"Sam. Do you really feel this way about me ?" Mary said quietly .
"Yes I do . Now how about that thing where you put your head in my lap and I stroke your hair ." Sam whispered as he kissed Mary on the cheek . Mary laughed and slowly rested her head in Sam's lap .
