Chapter 8

As Arthur turned his horse at the end of the long drive to get a view of the house from a far, where he had just spent the evening. He could see the potential of the building and the grounds that lay in front of him at that moment but it was slowly falling apart and so was the family he noticed how Rebecca never once smiled without it being forced and some reason he got the impression she couldn't stand him.

And Grace was silent for most of the evening, her mother look like the gossiper of the town and her father's face looked worn out from stress. As he gentle asked his horse to walk on he caught the evening sun on his face and headed to the direction of his uncle's. And his thoughts came across to "Mr William Dickens" he said out loud without realising it. He recognises him but he could not be sure he did say he was in London before he left for Scotland maybe he passed him in London, he was puzzled he hated to be puzzled and hated not knowing the answer in fact he thought the whole day had been rather puzzling. He rode faster to try and reach his Uncle's  house before the last of the evening sun went down in which case he succeed and he  did enjoy succeeding.

"Goodnight mother" Rebecca said whilst walking into her room hoping her mother would get the idea. Her mother just walked straight into her room and sat on Rebecca's bed, she obviously didn't get the idea thought Rebecca her face now changed into an annoyed look.

"How did the Afternon ride go?"

"It was okay" Rebecca wouldn't mind talking to her mother if she was actually interested in her. Rebecca yawned hoping her mother would notice and leave her she was really tired.

"Did Mr Dickens say much to you?"

Rebecca's patience was running low as always, she knew she would have to chose her words carefully, or her mother would tell the whole town.

"Nothing interesting really we talked about the weather and fathers grounds that is all."

"That's all, really I do not believe you!" she exclaims.

"Mother honestly that's all now will you leave me in peace so I can rest." she raised her voice ever so slightly.

"No not until you tell me everything that happen today"

"Nothing happen!"

"Then why did Mr Longford accompany you back?"

"As I have already said nothing happen and frankly what's it got to do with you?!" Spat Rebecca there voices began to rise.

"Everything I've done for you and you treat me like this I'll tell you why it's got to do with me because I'm your Mother and I ought to and have the right to know!" Her mother shouted shaking her head and walked out the room whilst slamming the door in anger.

Rebecca fell backwards with her arms out on her bed and sighed and layed there. silence finally she thought how wonderful it felt.

Rebecca woke up the next morning and decided she'd go into town and visit one of her closest friends Jane Phillips it seems like they have been friends since birth.

She got ready and walked down to the dining room for breakfast the only person in the dining room was her father so while she helped herself to breakfast, she greeted her father and sat down at the table and told her father her plans for the day, and he gave her some money to spend for the ball in two days time.

As she collected her belongings she pulled open the door and heard a voice behind her

"Where are you going?"

She turned around expecting it would probably be her mother

" Oh........ Mr Dickens I did not think it would be you."

" who else did you expect?"

Taken back a bit by the blunt question

" It does not matter, I'm just on my way out."

"Yes I had noticed that's why I was going to asked where you were going."

"Why are you interested?"

"Just trying to make conversation, that is all."

"I am afraid i do not have time to talk and i hope  would you agree with me that it is neither your concern where I am going either." and at that Rebecca shut the front door and walked down the long drive towards town not looking behind her.

*******

"Jane!" shouted Rebecca in the most unlady like manner, thankfully her mother wasn't there to tell her off.

Jane turned around and shouted "Rebecca!" In the same mammer and ran toward each other and greeted each other with a big hug.

"It feel's like ages since I've seen you." cried Jane as Rebecca had not come out as often since her brothers death.

"I know same here."

"I was worried that you had forgotten me." she laughed but her tone was as if she was saying she completely understood why.

"Never, never could anyone forget you Jane." they embraced in another hug.

"What brings you into town?"

"You of course."

" Really I feel honoured." putting her hand to her chested and they both giggled.

"It has been to long I am so sorry." spoke Rebecca with a sigh

" Do not worry its in the past I'm so happy to see you, I was just looking in town to see if I could see anything for the Wentworth's ball, do say you are going I can't bare to go to another ball without you." pleaded Jane whilst linking arms with Rebecca.

" Your be pleased to know I am going to the ball, Jane"

" I am now extremely excited to be going out to a ball, that I expected would be a rather boring evening " beamed Jane .

After a couple of hours of shopping, giggling and catching up with the latest gossip Jane asked " Rebecca please would you join me and my family for dinner this evening"

" I haven't got anything suitable wear though, just what I am wearing now. Besides that I would love to join you for dinner"

" Yes I understand and i was meaning to give you a dress actually it didn't suit me but I knew it would suit you, you can wear it this evening."

" That's to kind of you"

It wasn't long until they reached Hartfield Jane's house it was a lot more modern and beautiful then her fathers thought Rebecca.
