OBSERVATIONS
The car was silent for the most part as Eden's mum drove down the street towards Eden's new university. Eden shook her leg as she looked out the passenger side window at the passing trees. The sun shimmered through the empty spaces between the leaves, letting the fascinating patterns dance across her sleeve. As her mum pulled into the drop off, her shaking leg only intensified. Eden tried to shut off her over thinking mind by talking to her mother.
"Anything planned today?" Eden asked as she looked over at her mum.
"Not particularly. Maybe just doing the rest of the unpacking." Her mum- Violet- answered with a small smile.
"Well... I could stay home and help you but, y'know, first day back to school..." Eden said with a smirk playing on her lips.
"No way, kiddo. Time for school. You've been home for a week and a half 'helping me out'." Violet smiled. When Eden turned her focus to the campus her mother piped up again.
"Look, it won't be that bad, Eden. You'll make friends and you'll learn new things. It's not the end of the world. Things go on." Violet spoke with enthusiasm seeing if it would rub off on her daughter. Seeing as it wasn't working, she spoke again.
"I'll pick you up after school- if that makes it any more tolerable?" Her mother offered. Eden turned to see a warm smile spread across her lips and mirrored the face with less intensity before speaking.
"5:00." Eden reminded her as she popped open the door.
"Sounds good. Have a good day, okay kiddo? Don't stress over it. You'll be okay, Eden." Her mother offered her last few words of support before the car door shut. Eden slid one of the straps of her bag over her shoulder and started walking up one of the pathways to the administration building.
After settling into her first classes, Eden was more than grateful when the prof let the students go out for their lunch break. She followed behind the big crowd of people that pushed themselves out the doors to go to the lounge centre. Being her observant self, she took the time as she walked across campus to see the people who walked by taking in their faces, wardrobe, friends, and how they spoke. She knew to only make mental notes of the important things, as she'd done her whole life. Eden thought she'd be okay as long as she made a couple of friends within the first week or so. Shouldn't be a problem she thought to herself. The campus was speckled with trees losing their leaves, lovely old buildings that housed different classes and in the far back, the residences. Since there were a bunch of paths leading every which way to every building, Eden only noted the ones she took so she wouldn't get lost on her own.
Once lunch finished, Eden packed up her notes and laptop and tossed her garbage in the bin before exiting the building. She made her way to her final two classes of the day and made a couple acquaintances as she entered the building. As Eden sat down in one of the seats in the lecture hall, she observed as people walked in and started chatting with the girl who was sitting in front of her. Laura was her name and Eden already started to take a liking to her. Eden gave her a brief run down to why she moved towns and what not.
"You can hang around with us if you'd like. I think they'll like you." Laura suggested with a smile on her face.
"That'd be really cool actually, thanks." Eden smiled.
"No problem. I know how hard it can be." Laura said just before the professor walked in and the room went a little quieter. She tapped her hand on Eden's desk twice before turning around to face the front.
"Nice of you to show up." The teacher said from the front of the room as a tall boy in a copper coloured sweater walked through the doors. The heavy metal doors slammed behind him and he looked up and over at the prof saying sorry quietly. He crossed the room and took a seat beside Laura and slouched down into his chair after a couple of minutes of the prof speaking. Eden glanced down as she kept seeing Laura lean over to talk to him quietly during the lecture and looked back up when the boy looked over his shoulder at her. He quickly returned his eyes to the front of the room and Eden refused to look anywhere else but the prof and the board. As the lecture finished, Laura turned back around and started talking to Eden again as she packed away her things.
"Kahol, meet Eden. Eden, this is Kahol." Laura introduced the copper sweater boy to her. He turned around and smiled, holding his hand out to her. Eden noticed that he had modern round framed glassed on his face and hidden behind them were pretty hazel eyes. He had thick brown eyebrows that matched his ash brown coloured hair. Eden placed her hand in his and gave it a quick shake.
"It's kind of like Kyle but my family wanted to confuse people... What jerks right?" He chuckled as he looked down unsure if his joke was funny or not to the new girl.
"I like it better than Kyle... Don't worry." Eden laughed as they let go. As she finished packing up everything, they all left the hall together.
"Well since one knows about you, the gang is getting together tonight. They really would like to meet you if you're free?" Laura asked.
"Yeah, sure. I can see what's up." Eden agreed before the three swapped numbers.
