RETURN

Before I called Anne to thank her for my necklace the day after Christmas, I was able to think up a plan. I thought about Harry's unexpected gift; the fact that he took out his time to buy me something that he observed. I thought I would have seen his name on Anne's gift, kind of like a "from the family" thing. It surprised me that he bought something seperate for me.

"Hey Lucia." I heard Anne chime through the phone.

"Hi Anne." I smiled although she couldn't see.

"How're you?" She asked as I heard shuffling in the background.

"I'm great, how are you?" I responded.

     "I'm fine, dear." She said.

"I just wanted to thank you for the really nice gift. It means a lot." I smiled again as I looked down at the necklace clasped around my neck.

"Oh, we're glad you like it, Lucia." She said as I started to play with the "L" on the chain. Follow the plan.

"Hey, Anne. Is there a possibility that you could get Harry to meet up with me at the fish and chips place? I didn't give him his present before he left and I felt bad recieving his." I said trying to mask my nervousness.

"Yeah sure, Lucy. Would you like to talk to him or-" I cut her off.

"Could you tell him for me?" I asked as I bit my lip.

"Sure, Lucia." She said. We traded off meeting dates and then our goodbyes before we hung up. It's go time.

It was the day before winter break ended. I slipped out of bed remembering it was the day I met up with Harry to finish the plan. I chucked on a knit sweater and black jeans with my doc martens. I snatched my backpack and Harry's present before heading downstairs. I threw on a black coat and grabbed my phone before leaving the house.

I walked down the street beside where I was supposed to meet with Harry. It was colder than hell and the snow crunched under my boots as the wind nipped at my skin. When I turned the corner, I saw a dark figure pacing with its head down, shaking their shoulders up and down as if removing the cold from them. As I stepped closer, I watched as their hand moved up to their mouth, the burning end of the cigarette lighting their face just enough to show the shadows of their protruding features.

I stopped a fair distance away from the person knowing exactly who it was. They peered up at me and dropped the cigarette to the ground before walking over to me in large strides.

"Nice to see you Lucia." Harry said as he stopped in front of me.

"You too." I said in a monotone voice.

"Enjoy the gift?" He asked as he shoved his hands deeper into his pockets.

"Yeah, it's nice. Thanks." I said as I looked at my feet and tried to smooth out the snow under my boot. I didn't want to make eye contact with him but it was even worse not looking at him.

"So what'd you call me out here for?" He asked as I finally looked up at him.

"Oh right." I said as I swung my bag over one shoulder and unzipped it to reveal his present. I handed it over to him and he raised his eyebrows as I zipped the bag shut and placed it back on both shoulders.

"Just a little something for you since you bought me something." I shrugged as I started to turn away.

"Aren't you going to watch the reveal?" He asked as his fingers started to play with one of the edges of the wrapping paper.

"No, I already know what it is." I said nonchalantly as I turned away.

"What about the look on my face when I see it?" He piped up and I kept walking away from him.

"I already know what it will be." I said quietly as I turned the corner. Little did he know, what he had in his hand was the record he gave me with the picture tucked back in the slip just like when I received it. Oh how sweet that felt.
